The Sheltie Sniff-Down

Does anyone else get a sniff-down when they get home? I've had a few dogs throughout my life, but both Shelties have done something that the others didn't. As soon as I get home from work, or anywhere else that Missy didn't go with me, she sniffs my clothes like she's interrogating me. "Where have you been? Who were you with? What did you eat?" My Sheltie growing up also did this! And it's not like she's checking my pockets for treats, she just takes about 30 seconds or so to sniff my pants/shoes, and then lets me carry on my way. She's a wannabe TSA agent I guess.

All three of mine do, Jess, after they have jumped all over me. Hamish was the worst one for sniffing my hair after I had got it cut - nose right to the scalp.

not so much when I get home from work but anytime that I might have been elsewhere and gotten new good scents on me.
when I got home from socializing Destin's litter, Jocu gave me the millimeter by millimeter inspection:winkgrin:

I do, any time I've been somewhere without him. Same with my rainbow bridge boy, Harbour. And if I've been somewhere with another dog, it's an even more through sniff down inspection.

Yes! I get this from Honey all the time. Pepper couldn't care less, but Honey is really nose-orientated. Whenever we go anywhere, Pepper has her head up looking around, whereas Honey is always nose to the ground. If I go anywhere at all without her she needs to get all the details through the sniff-down.

Honey does this every time I come home from the shelter, and if I'm not lucky then goes and decides to pout.

If I'm coming home from the store or something she leaves the clothes alone, but about half the time she has to sniff my hands extensively.

Yep and they jump and twirl and spin to be able to be the first to sniff me. And I must be sniffed good and proper or it just isn't right.

Mine don't bother sniffing me - they're too interested in smelling my bag (in case there's food). But I think my two are out and about so much that any smells I bring home aren't that interesting or unusual for them.

Now the cats on the other hand, follow the dogs around sniffing them for ages when we come home. And sadly they don't sniff me either, just my hands if I've been eating.

Now you mention it, I'm feeling very neglected.:(

Mine do that too. Heck, Forrest has to sniff the mail and any packages that arrive too.

It was always much worse when I've worked in animal hospitals; had a cat who used to glare at me while she carefully sniffed me head to toe. I could imagine her thinking 'I bet she petted them too .'
