Thoughts and prayers with this Sheltie owner

A horrifying article to start my day. I honestly wish I hadn't read that. So sorry for the owner, I'd be both in immeasurable rage and sorrow.
 
This is so disgusting. Diesel seemed like a shy reactive Sheltie like my Kyara. So sad for the family.

I can clearly imagine that this man must be mentally ill as it is a very strange murder. Our society simply doesn't have intelligent rules and procedures to deal with mentally ill people. Try and bring a schizophrenic to get help and they will tell you unless he commits himself or does anything dangerous we cannot help. Guess stabbing a dog isn't considered as a dangerous act. I'm so upset.
 
I would be absolutely traumatized is some sick idiot did this to Mya. I cannot even imagine what the poor lady is going through right now. Then again, I would probably be the one going to court because I would be using the broomstick on him. If he could get easily upset over a sheltie, what would he do with my noisy kids?? If he's got a mental sickness of some sort, time to lock him up in a home.
 
I look at my dogs and just think how I would feel.

Apparently, the dog walked up to the man in a friendly manner, just like our Shelties do, and he objected.

It sounds awful, but was it premeditation, as he had a broomstick with a nail in it? You don't carry something like that for nothing.

Diesel was such a beautiful Sheltie. Thoughts and prayers are with his family this morning.
 
I guess I agree with those of you who have said that this attack was premeditated - stick with a spike at the end! His name should be released because he could take it into his head to do the same to a noisy child.......
Hopefully the community will keep an eye on him. They obviously know who he is.

It must have been premeditated. Who in their right mind would go home and make a nail mace without the intent to use it. Usually, sane angry people would think about giving a stern talking to to the (parent of the) offender. Swearing and swinging arms in the air is extreme enough. But how can you have the intent to kill?? This murderer needs his miserable life to be snuffed out now. He's no longer fit for society.
 
This is devastating! That creep has some mental issues! To kill a sweet dog who simply likes to bark. If you don't like it, talk to the owners about it! Animals are not just an object you can throw away. They are our family members and deserved to be treated like it. I really hope that the government stops visualizing our animals as property. If they wouldn't, this guy would have bigger fines than that and they would release his name on the spot. Times like this make me want to be an animal officer. Stick up for those who don't have a voice.

Poor Diesel! Beautiful family dog. I'm keeping him and his family in my prayers. That wouldn't be an easy event to overcome.
 
Some of the neighbours were on the radio this afternoon. They said that the dog had aggression issues with both people and other animals and while the owner did keep it on lead and tried to stay out of pedestrians' paths, the dog had gotten loose a few times and scared a number of neighbours. One neighbour, horrified by what happened, said that he no longer allowed his children to play out front because of this dog. He said that it was only a matter of time before someone was bitten as the dog would lunge and snap at people. I DO NOT think that the solution was to kill the dog, especially in such a horrific manner, but it seems that it was not the sweet shy sheltie we originally heard about. Our laws concerning people attacking animals are almost as bad as the ones covering dogs that are dangerous. It's a horrific situation and I feel badly for the owners of the dog. They tried to control the dog the best they could and to witness this horrible end must be devastating.
As for the guy, yeah, I think he is nuts but he rents in the house he lives in and I would hate to see the other renters in the same house hurt by someone that wants to pay this guy back for what he has done. There are more kooks around then him.

I don't think it matters if the dog was known to have aggressive tendencies or not. The main issues are whether the dog was being aggressive at the time the man killed him (which apparently, the dog was not), and whether the man had planned to kill the dog (which apparently, he did - he already had a custom-made weapon).

I don't know about the laws in Canada, but if this had happened to me in the U.S., I would push for felony assault on ME with a deadly weapon. How would I know if the guy had plans to kill just my dog or both of us? He had to approach the owner with the weapon, that's felony assault. (To clarify, in the U.S., felony assault is assault with a deadly weapon, misdemeanor assault is w/o.) Slapping the guy with only animal-related charges basically means he won't be penalized in any meaningful way. Charging him with felony assault? That would do it.

Although I have always believed that whenever a person commits an act of cruelty against an animal, he or she should receive a punishment of the exact same treatment. You light a cat on fire, I light you on fire. Totally fair in my book.
