Thoughts on EVO Reduced Fat

Hi Everyone,
It has been forever since I posted. So I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the Innova EVO Reduced Fat. I've been thinking of putting Blue on it. I went to the Local Pet Food Store & the guy there suggested it when I told him that Blue always acts hungry & wants to eat constantly. He said that with the high protein content it will make him feel fuller longer. I'm a little worried about it though with 52% protein content & only 15% fat. I picked up TOTW for when he finishes the Chicken Soup just not sure which I should go with. Thoughts?
 
A lot of people are looking but no one is commenting. Possibly because they wonder, as do I, if Shelties really should be eating the super high protein dog food. And no one wants their dog to be the guinea pig.

Natura backs up their claims of how their food is processed by outside checks/audits. I personally use their Innova products because of their ISO certification. And "Miss Picky" loves their dry food.

This is my third Sheltie. And one thing that seemed to be true for all three dogs is they are not big water drinkers. (At least in comparison to other breeds.) With the high concentrated protein dog foods (it is my belief) that they really need extra water to help their kidneys process the protein. Raw meat has the water in the tissues so I really don't believe you can make a good comparison between the two. That said, on my dog food foray to find a food that the current pup would eat, I did try the Evo Red. After a couple weeks her urine seemed to be more concentrated and was actually irriating her skin. I did mix her food with water and a small amount of canned. I changed her to the Innova and solved the problem.

And just a thought. Sheltie's were orginally bred to be small and frugal with their food requirements. That was because of the lack of food and the rough terrain of the Shetland Islands. So it makes one question whether they should be on a high protein diet. And again this would probably depend if it's a house dog or an agility dog.

The AAFCO has always had minimum standards for dog food production. They are starting to look at maximum standards. Apparently there is some concern with too much of a good thing.

Wow! 52% Protein! My friend lost a ton of weight on a pure protein diet and I expect that this is what its trying to emulate.

I've got my boys on a high protein diet, grain-free diet, and think its great, but this seems totally over the top.

Pitterpatter is correct about the water. When I was researching high protein diet, I came across a website, which I never found again, which highlighted the importance of good water intake. It had nothing to do with the paranoia about kidney problems on high protein. I sure wish I could find the website again.

Notwithstanding, I monitor my dogs water intake daily. They both drink a healthy amount, but not over the top.

I tend to think a "regular" high-protein, grain-free diet would have the same positive effects.
 
High protein diet?

I had my 12 year old on Core Grain Free for about 1 1/2 years which is 33% protein. He had routine blood work and it showed elevated liver and kidney enzymes. My vet said it has to do with the high protein. He is now on a 22% protein diet and he will have blood work done in a few months to see that everything is fine. I was excited about feeding him this food, but it is not good for him. Maybe, due to his age? His kidneys were having to work a little harder to get rid of the toxins from the extra protein. I also do not think he was drinking enough water to help flush him out. This is some "food for thought" regarding my experience with a high protein diet. Also, maybe shelties are not suppose to have high protein diets due to their breeding, as mentioned in one of the messages.

Although my food knowledge when it comes to dog food is still an evolving thing with me,my feelings would be not to be putting this type of dog on such a higher protien food.

I feel it does serve as a good food for a working dog,one that is used in hunting,a true working breed,as they need the protein to keep thier bodies in shape. One that is constantly used for such purposes.
I would never go this high for a sheltie.

There is alot of disagreement about the impact of high protein and impact on liver and kidney's. I posted some links elsewhere that discusses some of the truths/myths about high protein. I tend to think that most Vets are ultra-cautious about it....maybe they prefer to sell what's they have in their stock???

I'd love to hear from some vets (I know we've got a least one on the forum.....come out, come out, whereever you are!!!!) :wink2:
