Three month old Sheltie in Sioux Falls Humane Society

I frequently look at the Sioux falls Humane Society website. Looking for up coming events. And yes I can not help myself and usually look at the dogs for adoption section.:o

Today for the first time in 3 years I saw a Sheltie. Had I not gotten Ryder, my second Sheltie, almost a year ago...I would be running to the Shelter. I recognize my limitations and 2 Shelties is all this green owner can handle.

A shelter is a really hard place for a Sheltie to handle. I would love to help this little boy. Any one with serious interest I am willing to go meet him and give you feed back and even take more pics of him. He is only 3 months old.

what a cutie..I think Sca needs a buddy!! :wink2:

I wonder if you have a sheltie rescue in that area if you could contact them to see if they can take him out of there until they can find him his new home.

I know..I wish. There are not rescues near by. I went the rescue route before getting Ryder.

I am going to bring him some things this week. A bed, that my spoiled children did not take a second look at, some toys. And I am going to get him some really good puppy food. I would like to see if I could spend some time with him.

So glad you are going to visit him. It breaks my heart to see a Sheltie in the Shelter. Maybe they would consider you fostering him until a permanent home is found. Thinking they may consider it since you currently own 2 Shelties and have some experience with the breed. :wink2:

Karen,

Is the Humane Society rescue friendly? Here are a couple of area Sheltie rescues (when I say area, I mean within a 5 hr drive or so).

Minnesota Sheltie rescue: Karen Marquardt klm@mnsheltierescue.org 612-616-7477 or 612-616-7477

This next guy is from Lincoln, NE, and he does rescue for KS Sheltie Shack (just mentioned on the home page)

With that being said, I'm thinking a Sheltie puppy will go quick -- since he looks purebred. When I had Alice, we had a couple of people contact us within 12 hours of posting her on Petfinder. Her puppies have taken longer (still have Edith) but the young, pure-breds go fast.

Thanks guys for the feed back. I will definitely make some calls this afternoon and I will keep you posted.

I would love to foster him but I don't think that they would allow 3 dogs in an apartment. Not that I live in an apartment, but I would be after my husband divorces me.

I just inquired about Bishop. He is kept in the front office with Staff so he is being well socialized. They only foster animals that are sick or have special needs. They don't want to send him to a Sheltie rescue group because they figure he will be adopted real fast. I will be dropping of some donations to them at the end of the week and I will also meet with him.

Bless you, Karen, for taking such an interest in this little boy. It's a good thing I don't live closer!

I agree with Lightplum...Sca, where are you? Here's your perfect buddy!

If you can easily ask when you go whether the Humane Society folks are aware that Shelties are a breed that requires more gentle handling than some, that might help them in their placement. I'm afraid this is why these guys sometimes end up in this situation. People who get them don't always realize they aren't as rough and tumble as some others.

I would love to get Sca a buddy but asking Mom and Dad too watch two of them is a bit much. Also I think I would be herded to death :eek2:

Just a thought...why would they have to know it is a Sheltie rescue "adopting" him? If you found a rescue that would take him; they could "adopt" him and then find his forever home.
