Tick Collars

We are taking the dogs with us on vacation this year to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia for a week in late July. I have them on Trefexis year around and that seems to do the job in Central Illinois for fleas.

The cabin we rented is in a very wooded area. We plan on hiking and playing around in the woods. I am wondering if I should get the dogs on something for tick prevention.

The dogs are a 2 year old bi blue sheltie and an 8 year old collie, both with full coats. I have never used tick collars before. Would it be effective?

We've used the Preventic Collar and found it worked great. We never found any ticks on our dogs, only half dead, partially paralyzed ones on the floor.

That being said, we don't live in your area so I'm not sure if ticks in some areas are more immune to some treatments than in others.

We've had tick problems for over 6 years (FINALLY getting it under control) and the collars have never worked for my dogs. I don't know if it was just the severity of the tick problem and the collars weren't strong enough or if they just didn't work. I use Frontline Plus drops. It has contributed a lot in killing the ticks. Before, I would find about 20 ticks on good days and 100 on bad. After using Frontline and Bear lawn insect killer, and finally getting the neighbors to clean their backyard (it was a tick breeding ground!), I haven't found a live one in 3 weeks!

Have fun on your trip and take lots of pix of your furkids! I've always wanted to visit the Georgia mountains. I'm so jealous!
