I'm trying to train my Sheltie to walk along a path. He sort of destroyed the grass in our backyard last summer, so this summer I'd like to train him to walk only along the path in the yard. There's a big deck in the yard that he can hang out on, and a path that leads to the back fence. I'd like him to stick to the path if he wants to walk around, and stay off the grass/flowers.
There's a U bend in the path, and I've tried standing on one end of it, and asking him to come to me for a treat. Since he doesn't get that he's not supposed to go off the path, he just takes the shortest path and crosses over the grass. I keep on trying to repeat this until he gets it right (and then I give him the treat), but he just doesn't get it. I've tried holding his collar to lead him along the path, then giving him the treat, but it still doesn't seem to "click".
Any suggestions?
