Treats?

Hello,

I am getting ready to take my sweet boy, Pippin to puppy class (advanced obedience). Our last class was almost two years ago. Anyway, we are to bring treats "about the size of cheerios" to class. I am having difficulty deciding on what treats to bring. Pippin loves food. period. He does not seem to have one great food that he absolutely loves. He is more excited about meat and vegetables than cereals. (It sounds like I feed him everything- but I am pretty careful with his diet - LOL)

I would rather not give him treats with a lot of preservatives (i.e. cut up hotdogs - although I know he would love these). Any ideas?

Thanks!!

I buy a roll of dog food that Smoke thinks is the best tasting thing in the world. I think the brand name is Pet Botanics. I just cut the food roll into little pieces and take them to class with me. The same brand makes a line of treat rolls but the ingredients are exactly the same so its cheaper to buy the food roll and slice it up.

I also take cut up cheddar cheese to have some variety, hes a big lover of cheese too.

Ever heard of fishy fudge? One of Treader's pals on Dogster makes fishy fudge for her Shelties to use during training.
I don't know the recipe. I guess you could Google it.

Fishy Fudge

Here's a recipe I found for the fishy fudge.

Fishy Fudge

2 cans tuna in water OR 1 large can salmon in water (don't drain the water, use it)
2 eggs
1 tsp garlic powder (optional)
1.5 cups flour (any type will do)

Put fish, eggs and garlic in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a bowl and add flour, mix. Spread in a greased 8x8 glass baking dish. Bake for 15 minutes at 350F. Remove from oven and cut into ~1 inch squares (will still be really goopy at this point). Put back in the oven and bake for another 10-15 minutes at 350F. Remove from oven and let cool. Break into pre-cut squares. Will keep in the fridge in an airtight container for at least a week.

These treats are VERY stinky and nice and soft so work really well for training. I have yet to meet a dog that doesn't like them Depending on how long you bake them, they can be the consistency of dense bread to Play-Doh. If you want them drier, then bake a few minutes longer.

If you cut them into ~1 inch squares then they are very handy to take a piece and rip small treats off for training, or toss a whole piece out as a BONUS for a job well-done!

How about making Liver cake, you do need a strong stomach and you need to keep your windows open as it stinks something awful.
Pkt of lambs liver
2/3 cloves of garlic or a teaspoon of garlic powder
Approx 2 tablespoons of olive oil
1 egg
flour ( self raising or plain I use self raising ) to bind it together til it looks like cake mix.
Liquidize the liver ( this is where the strong stomach comes in ), add the oil the egg and the crushed garlic, mix in the flour. Shove in a rectangular cake tin, bake in a medium oven for about 20 mins until a knife comes out dry. I usually put the oven of turn the cake out and put it back in the oven to let it dry out a bit more. Cut the cake up and you can either keep it in the fridge for a few days or freeze it and just take out what you need.

Thanks everyone!! I am not sure I have the stomach to handle the liver treats (lol), but I will try the others. Love this forum.
