Tremors?

I have a ten year old sheltie named Ginger. Yesterday morning, she started shaking for no apparent reason. Shaking isn't unknown in her, usually it's because she's afraid of something, like a loud noise (thunder) or a car ride.

It went away, so I assumed she'd had a fright, perhaps the cat was terrorizing her. She was perfectly normal last night.

This morning, it was back. We thought at first maybe the wind was scaring her (there have been very high winds in the area), but when I got home ten minutes ago, I found her still shaking. She also seems reluctant to raise her head. She doesn't seem to respond to food like she normally would, if I sit down she gets in my lap and shakes, something she only does when she's scared. I know tremors/shaking aren't unheard of in a small dog, and I plan on making a vet appointment tonight to see if I can find out exactly what might be causing it.

In the meantime, though, has anyone else experienced this, particularly with a dog in senior years?

My 10 y.o. also shakes when she's frightened, and MANY things scare her...even turning on the exhaust fan over the oven sends her shaking from the room! But it always stops when the stimulus is gone, i.e. storm, noise, whatever. If there's nothing unusual in your house that could be causing her discomfort, it almost sounds like a pain issue with how she is holding her head and lack of appetite. My nervous nelly Ivy once exhibited the same reaction though when she'd hurt her neck as you're describing. I'd be reluctant to medicate her with anything until your vet sees her, but perhaps it might be good if you could confine her to a crate or secure area in case she's hurt herself somehow. Let us know what happens, please, and good luck!

Welp, it turns out she was being frightened by the wind. She got the all's-clear from the vet, who suggested that she's just been hearing the high winds we've been having lately on a different frequency from the rest of us.

No wind this morning, so she's fine.

Good news, Spak, thanks for the update! Two of our past Shelties were terrified by storms, loud noises, thunder etc. :eek2: A nutritionist once told me to give them a 3 mg pill of melatonin and it would help settle them down. You can get it in the drugstore where the vitamins are. I've used it for years, although now I also use Azmira's R&R homeopathic drops for such things. Either works well. Maybe something to try for the next windstorm!

Our ancient rescue Collie, Lassie, predicts thunderstorms for us. If Lassie starts pacing and circling, we know to shut down the computers -- there's bad weather coming!

We know a thunderstorm is coming if Cookie, my German Shepherd, starts getting a worried look in her eyes and trying to hide. Sort of like this::uhoh:
Treader isn't afraid of thunder storms at all.:biggrin2:

Well, Ginger's always been terrified of thunderstorms. We find her in the weirdest places when the booms start... like in the bathtub, or my personal favourite, wedged under the couch cushions.
