I am super excited, Che starting tricks class today! I have been waiting for this offering at our facility for while. In the meantime we had great fun at tricks class on line with Silvia Trkman. Not us/ I am really lousy with camera/ but cutest clips from the class graduation tapes if you scroll down the link. For us some tricks are still work in progress and most we got down pat.

Do you teach tricks? Why and why not?

I love teaching tricks...although Bailey doesn't know many. All she knows is paw, high-five, spin and crawl. I'm trying to teach her to pick up a toy and put it in her toy basket, but she's not grasping it. The past three days, I've been clicking and treating her for touching the toy with her nose, but she thinks I want her to touch the toy with her paw. She probably thinks that because of our 2o2o training. I just can't get her to understand it...but I am determined!

I try to work on some kind of mental exercise every night. Tricks are great to teach after dinner, when you just want to sit down and watch some TV.

If anyone has any websites that demonstrate how to teach tricks, post them up.

small thing that works for us- put the toy on the table or higher surface if your pup tends to be pawsy. It increases their response cost i.e. it takes more effort to lift the paw so they start using nose.

My dogs don't know a ton of tricks either. I admit it's because I usually don't know how to teach them correctly.

Lexi knows: Roll over, bang, spins, sit up, jump into my arms
Bentley knows: Roll over, spins, shake, high five, crawl and sit up

I am trying the same thing Randi mentioned and having the same problems. Lexi will nose touch or even paw touch all day long. But I feel like it could take months (if ever!) she were to open her mouth and pick it up.

will there be anything she voluntary carry in her mouth? As long as you don't think it is dangerous object I would reinforce the heck of this habit. It helped with my boys.

Well, the problem for me at least is if there are treats around I can't get her to pick anything up. If there are no treats she'll pick up pretty much whatever I ask her to!

Got you! I worked the following way- the moment I seen my boy carry something in his mouth even if it is inappropriate daddy's hat or shoe I would come and jack pot it. Before I knew they were deliberately brining me all kinds of things just to get a treat. Then I put a cue to regulate it. It might take longer and you have to observe and catch the behavior first...

Tricks

I to love teaching tricks.Since I have retired Shadow from agility he has learned some new ones. The one I taught last week was cross your paws.I bought Sylvia Trkman trick video and have it downloaded to my computer.I do not have a dvd burner otherwise I would share it.Shadow does play dead, bows, prayers, weaves in and out of legs, jumps in my arms, backs up, speaks on command(worse trick I ver taught as he has a big mouth)crosses paws, roll over, high fives, begs, left, right (what u call spins).

Yay tricks!! Romeo is my tricks dog. That's what I started training him when I got him anyway (before I got into this whole agility thing!) I've decided not to "force" him into doing obedience and focus on tricks with him instead. He LOVES it. And coz he's quite clicker savvy he picks things up very quickly. Latest trick we're learning is having him do a figure 8 around my legs backwards!

Juliet's learning a couple of tricks too. She's also focusing on obedience and agility, so alot for the little miss to learn! But she's kinda cute in that she'll come up with random things on her own which I find hilarious, so I continue to work on that. Like how I was trying to teach triebball to her, but she decided to be a circus dog and walk with 2 of her paws on the ball instead. Latest trick for her was digging on cue! She learnt that quick at the beach!

When I find more time (need more time!) I'd like to get the tricks title for the both of them from Kyra Sundance. Love her books!

I went and got Silvia Trkman's videos for heeling and tricks some time ago. I didn't know she had online classes!
