trii-factored sable merle?

Yes, Cran is a tri-factored sable Merle as
his sire is a tri-factored sable and his dam a blue Merle. The reason the litter turned out so colorful. :) All the colors of the rainbow except bi's

thanks for confirming- kinda thought he was since there were 3 tris in the litter too:winkgrin:

Thanks for the information... one more question. What is the history on a pure for sable merle?

I am not really sure. I don't think alot of people bred sable to sable merle, which is the only way you would get a pure for sable merle. Most sable merles I know have been from a AOAC to sable breeding.

Ember(bi blue) came from a bi factored Sable bred to a bi factored blue merle. In theory, every color(sable, bi black, tri, blue merle, bi blue, and sable merle) could have been produced. As it was in her litter, 2 sable merles, 2 bi blues and 1 sable.

Ok have to figure something out here. I'm still a "newbie" so to speak in breeding, so I may not be getting this right... but on what I've studied... sable is a dominant gene and in my thinking, sable to sable no matter the factoring would produce sables. Now if you bred a sable Merle to a tri you could figure out the Merle gene so to speak if she produces a blue merle

Since sable is dominant, it can easily mask black. a dog who doesn't inherit a brown gene can't be brown.

My blue dog came from a blue to sable breeding. We got a blue and two tris.

It's a good thing we only have one variable gene, some breeds like Border Collies and Poodles have multiple genes that interact.

I think that description fits Cranberry- he's pretty dark in some places:winkgrin:

Looking at those pictures makes me excited to see how Percy's coat turns out. He is a tri-factored sable merle. I'm sure because his mother is a blue merle and his father is sable (evidently, tri-factored as there was a tri in the litter). His breeder didn't want a sable merle and ended up with five of the seven pups in the litter being sable merles. She kept the two that weren't; the tri and a sable. The rest were sold as pets, luckily for me! :)

I'm excited too to see how Percy grows up.
Cran's mom was a blue merle and dad was a mahogany sable.
there was one blue merle, one smerle, two sables and 3 tris in his litter.
I wanted to get a smerle that you could tell that was what he was and I was fortunate enough that his markings are still evident though much less so than they were as a pup. of course, one look at his face gives it away:winkgrin:

I think it's interesting that they both came from such large litters; seven puppies is a lot for a sheltie. One of the five smerles in Percy's litter had 2 brown eyes, but all of the rest had one blue and one brown. I prefer the one blue and one brown on him; it makes the fact that he's a sable merle much more evident. I have nothing against regular sables. My last dog, Sebastian, was a mahogany sable. I think that a merle should look like a merle, though. I like how my distinctive little puppy looks. :)

I like how your puppy looks too:smile2:
I should say that my other two dogs are both Mahogany sables- (http://cranberrycallie.shutterfly.com/630)- I'll be in the market for any other color than brown in the future- the only way to get the rainbow:winkgrin:

Awwww...they look so cute lying down next to each other! They look like BFFs. :D I told the breeder that I got Percy from that I didn't care about color or gender that I was looking for a puppy with a calm personality. So far so good with that. LOL! I think that all of the colors are so pretty that there's no way to go wrong. You do have quite the sea of brown there, so you might need another color to break it up a little. ;)
