True slipping out of her collar!!!

I thought I would get some opinions from everyone before I make another purchase. When we go for walks, True will sometimes jerk back and slip out of her collar. To remedy this...I bought a harness. It worked great for a while but she is slipping out of it. I make sure I can fit two fingers under both. She slipped out today and took off into our road (subdivision). I was on her heels but she thought it was all fun and games. She quickly realized I was not playing and I was able to grab her. Tommorow...I plan on making a purchase on a harness or collar that is harder for her to pull out of. Any suggestions would be great. The harness and collar that she has are not any special type. I use her harness as a vehicle restraint...which works great. True just likes to scare me at times when we are outside

The only type of collar I would ever use on my Shelties when taking them for a walk is a martingale style collar. They are perfect for a shelties head where the head is small and the neck/ruff is larger. They only tighten when there is pressure, and they tighten only to a certain point....unlike a choke collar.

I have heard of a martingale collar...is it easy for them to slip out off? Also, does it tighten enough so it would stay on? I agree....I would never use a choke collar.

I'm not sure there is a collar that is 100% slip-free. I hear a lot about the martingales, but then someone on here said their dog slipped out of it as well. I use a step in harness with Meggie and if she is going forward she cannot slip out of it, but one night an American flag scared her and she started backing up. Somehow she backed right out of the harness.

When she was a pup I made these harnesses for her. They were the only ones she could not escape from.

Deska can get out of martingales - no matter how tight. I do have nylon slip leads that are harder to slip out of, but not impossible. I dont know I would use a slip lead on a young dog or a puller, but I dont have a problem with them being used - if you do go for a slip lead get something a bit wider so any pull is distributed over the neck.

Both mine can get out of the car harnesses, they aren't very good at keeping a small dog in. I have proper walking harnesses which neither of mine get out of. Don't worry about the two finger fit for harnesses, they are meant to be snug so they dont slip around.

Start with making your current harness tighter so it fits snuggly over her girth and shoulders (not too tight she can't breathe). If she can still get out best to get a heavier walking harness.

Why not use two? A collar AND a harness for double the protection! Just make sure both are fitted correctly and clip the least to both.

Good luck Becky...and when you find one that works, let me know. We're on our third generation of harnesses on Sasha and she can still slip out. She's slipped collars, martingales, and harnesses. I swear she's in the new one so tight she can squeak...and she can still twist out of it.

I don't know what to say,but possibly a martingale.It's worth a try.

I use a harness on both Trapp & Jasper.Neither have ever slipped out of one.The harness I use for Trapp is actually his car harness.I got it in Walmart.It's made specifically for travel.

The whole buckle attachment is very wide at the withers.You should find them easily. They come in a box,and the one I purchased was there on a top shelf where the feeding dishes were located.
There is a whole line of products.Car blankets,harness' etc. As for Jaspers harness,his is made by Premier,and is fairly wide strapping,and heavy duty.Nothing flimsy about it.

I'm sure she scared the crap out of you,when she went down the road.Lets hope that you can find something that works soon.

I use either the white pine martingale, or a chain choke. There is nothing wrong with a choke collar, especially in a breed with big necks and skinny heads. Collars should be no more than two fingers tight.
