Tryptophan

Meadow has been on Prozac for almost a year now for her extreme reactivity and redirected aggression. I have been doing research into tryptophan as an all natural alternative to the Prozac. I have read positives and negatives of the tryptophan and even the use of both Prozac and tryptophan at the same time!!! I am wondering if anyone has used tryptophan for this purpose and what the results were. Any input is much appreciated. Thanks.

The only thing I know about tryptophan is that it is very effective against insomnia in humans and non addictive. I used it for years 2-5g (huge pills) before bed.

Didn't you learn your essential amino acids at school? I remember having to memorise them and it's one of the few things that have stuck in my memory of the years.

I'd approach this with extreme caution. The drugs interaction database (www.drugs.com) states that the interactions between the two drugs is major "Using tryptophan together with Fluoxetine is generally not recommended. Combining these medications can increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called the serotonin syndrome..."

Caro is right.

This is well known, as L-Tryptophan is a Seretonin precurser IIRC.
Definitely not advised for concomittant use with an A/D.

Would suggest L-Theanine and Pikamilon .

Both are available in bulk (oz. quantities for $15-20) and together seem to work very well for people.
