hi everyone

Miles is going to the vet tonight for his 2nd round vaccination and check up. As Sheltie experts, could someone advise as to any common conditions Sheltie pups suffer so i could ask the vet to look out for it? Any allergic reaction to certain injections...etc?

Please be certain when it's time to put miles on heart worm meds and Flea products do not take any heart worm meds with Ivermectin !! This should not be given to Shelties, collies, and I believe Border collies. Shelties as they get older are prone to Kidney disease, Dental problems. So be sure to attempt to take extra good care of Miles teeth. They are prone to Thyroid problems as well. The less meds the better. Most vets now are attempting to do vaccineson a 2-3 year series after their first year. Best of health to Miles and just stay informed.

None of my guys have ever had any issues with their shots.

As for common conditions - your vet will ask you the questions - but mostly will deal with eating, pooping, vomitting. Is the pup eating and drinking well, firm stools, no vomit. How is energy level. Pups this age will go in fits and spurts. They'll go, go, go - then drop comatose for hours!

If he's a good vet, he'll ask you if their are any behavioural issues you are concerned about.

He should also advise you as to how to self-assess the condition of your pup. How to check ears and eyes for infection, how to determine if your pup is gaining weight at the right rate (too much or too little - by instructing you to feel his ribs), coat condition, teeth condition, etc.

Some additional information on drugs in addition to Ivermectin that may need to be avoided. Some of the herding dog breeds have a mutation of the multi-drug resistance (mdr1) gene. The web site www.BusterAlert.org has info to download including the breeds most commonly affected (Shelties included), a list of drugs that should be avoided, etc. I did not have Spencer tested, but made the decision to take no chances so his Vet has a copy of this list and a verbal reminder from me when I bring Spencer in for anything.
