Vomiting, and not eating food

Hi there, I've been gone for awhile but I'm back. Anyway, I have a question about what may be going on with my dog Ash. He has always been prone to vomiting every so often and well he hasn't been eating his food regularly. I feed my boy Blue Buffalo dry dog food, and the way he eats it sometimes I feel like he might have really sensitive teeth. But I just would like to hear some feedback in seeing if anyone else has ever had this problem?

Thanks. :D

There are so many reasons that a dog will vomit and turn off their food. It ranges from eating too fast, pieces too big or too small, sensitive stomach, stress, inability to digest something in the kibble, illness and plain - not fussy on that food or protein. Keep a data sheet on what is going on the day he vomits, how much water he was drinking, what you were doing on that day, colour and consistancy of vomit. Get bloodwork done to rule out some of the systemic problems that can cause vomiting. While you are at the clinic, have them look at the teeth and gums.

He just had bloodwork done like a month ago, and the vet said that he was healthy. They just checked his gums at the beginning of this month, and they told me that he had really healthy looking gums and teeth. Doing a datasheet does sound like a good idea, I'll definitely do that.

Rhiannon was horrible when she was younger for eating about 1/2 a bag of food and then deciding that she didn't like it anymore. Getting any weight on her was impossible. I use to threaten to put a sign around her neck stating that she really did get fed! I spoke to a few reps from different manufacturers and they advised me to never take the food out of the bag to be put in a bin as the taste of plastic or tin of the bin would be absorbed by the food. I was also told that dog food should be stored near an inside wall and to watch were overstock was being kept in a store. Once I started leaving the food in the bag and putting the bag in the bin sealed up, she ate much better. She did go off food, and would sometimes vomit, if she was stressed from storms or us being absent for long periods and I often had to put her on Metronidazole for a day or two just to calm her tummy. She seldom does this anymore since I started feeding her Go Natural but I don't know if it is the food or that she is older now and handles things better. At the skin seminar, Dr. Yu mentioned that you should avoid buying large quantities of feed if you can't use it quickly as some type of microscopic mite can grow on the food. This isn't a problem for me but there have been times that I have frozen dog kibble because I was't going to be able to go through it very fast - not enough eaters.

All good advice, especially getting smaller bags of food. I know Beau won't eat if his food goes stale, so, I won't even try to get bigger bags even if its economical.

I remember also reading somewhere, that sometimes especially if a dog throws up in the morning that it may be because he has an empty stomach, so, you may want to try and switch up his eating times see if it helps

At any rate, I hope your doggie is feeling better soon

Huh, it might be the plastic bin. I never thought of that before that their food might be absorbing the plastic smell, and putting off a plastic kind of taste. I mean it's weird, he's really picky about his eating yet he still weighs a lot for a sheltie (doesn't look like it though), and his brother just laps up his food whenever I put down for him. I stopped buying the 40 pound bags of food, and now buy like a 15 pound bag whenever I go to PetSmart every 2 weeks to try and give them fresher food. Maybe it is his nerves. But thank you for all the helpful advice.

I know that he was just at the vet but another thing to watch could be his gallbladder. Our angel Hollie had gallbladder issues. Looking back she had issues for many years before being diagnosed.

She was a picky eater and would vomit bile. We (vet included) always thought it was the Lyme disease or she was vomiting because of an empty stomach. It wasn't until her liver enzymes were elevated that they ultrasounded her gallbladder.

My husband did some research and found that shelties are prone to gallbladder disease because they naturally have higher cholesterol.

Hope he is doing better.

I buy the smaller bags of food and store in the original package in a plastic garbage can with a lid. We go through a bag about every two to three weeks, less often now that Liam is on raw. I was warned also not to empty the bag into a plastic container because the plastic draws out the oil in the food.

Keeping a diary is good. Perhaps save a bit of the food and give for a bedtime snack - I have to do with this my stomach issues or I have trouble with nausea in the morning.

Does he eat twice a day or once a day? Mally eats twice a day.

The same eating schedule from when I was working. (I am retired now)

Mally eats 1/2 cup kibble at 10am and 1/2 cup at 8:30 pm.

ps I was told it is better break up the total amount of food they eat, and feed them half of the total twice a day. I know my stomach would be messed up if I only ate once a day! (also I would be weak as a kitten!)
