Walking On A Leash Problem

Hey Guys,

hows it going. Im new here and i have a little shetland sheepdog (Sheltie) wich is 4 months old.

I wanted to ask about Walking on a leash issues.
I just trained my sheltie to walk with me (He walks back of me for some reason) but when ever a car passes by and or he sees dogs barking at him, he goes nuts or just stays and looks before he starts running off.

How can i train him to take long walks? evade staring and panicing when ever he sees cars and dogs?

Hi, JinSaiYa! Here's how I solved that problem with Layla (cars): I worked very hard to make sure she knew "sit." When we'd walk, when I saw a car coming by, I'd have her sit, and then I'd say, "Leave it." If she pulled toward it, I'd say, "No! Leave it" and make her sit again. Of couorse, I always praised her every time she sat, even after she headed toward a car and I had to re-sit her. Now, at two years, she pretty much ignores cars. If she even looks at one, she hears, "Layla, don't you dare" and she KNOWS what that means! "Leave it" is the single most valuable command Layla ever learned. Our Shelties will even ignore food if they hear those words. We don't even have to use "No." By the way, you say "NO" in a low, short tone, different from your regular voice.

Remember, your little guy really is a little guy -- just like a toddler. Toddlers need constant reminding about how to act and constant praise every time -- and I mean EVERY TIME -- they do the right thing.

I recommend The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete. We used that for Layla, and her behavior in public is nearly perfect. Of course, at home she can be a little hellion! :lol: Bits, too, was raised with this method, and Annie Laurie, our rescue, is coming right along thanks to the Monks. Thanks for the help. Im actually doing that. Making him sit and praise him alot when ever a car passes by or something.

I don`t know exactly how i will be able to get that book youve mensioned before.. It seems pretty good. The fact is that i don`t live in the us. I live in Chile, down in South America, and my options for books and pretty much everything, is very restricted.

Anyhow, thanks ALOT for the help. Any other suggestions, including cars, dogs, or any training tips to teach him tricks, will be more than welcomed :D

Scary Cars

Hi. I've had the same problem with my 3 month old boy.
Anytime a car goes by his goal is to get back to the house ASAP. I've began the 'Sit' and we both just watch the car and then I praise him for being so brave.
I've also read that anytime your pup is scared of anything that you are supposed to Stand up, and talk nicely to the scary object and not cuddle or pet them because that looks like your scared too. But, being a herder, I don't want him to think cars are a good thing, lol. So we just quietly watch them go buy while I kneel squat beside him. We also have the same issue with Planes. lol. Although we can't watch those go buy. I have a feeling it's going to be a long time before we can successfully go for a walk.

the problem with the books and the "buying from the us" is that the simple fact that i live in Santiago, Chile. (South America). The price will rise over to around 35 dollars just to get the book, and in time.. well.. alot of time. An anyhow, amazon does not ship to chile.. you know what i mean?

Im kinda stuck.

Yeah.. Prices are crazy.. I Just wish i could grab a hold of a copy or scans or anything.
