Wanting another Sheltie

Everyone is right! Sheltie's are addictive! I would like to either rescue or purchase another sheltie. I would like either an older puppy (8 mos or so) or a dog. I was also wondering if a more outgoing dog would help bring Pogo out of his shell? I know, I know...an outgoing sheltie-that's an oxymoron. :yes:

Are there any breeders/rescues located (that anyone knows of) near Memphis, TN? I'm not opposed to driving to the breeder/rescue, but I'm not really looking to drive to CA or somewhere extremely far.

one place you can check is SheltieNation.com , right in the right hand side of the forum page. Right under Quick links. At about the middle of the page on the left hand side they have a list of states and the available shelties through them. Good Luck on your search.:wink2:
 
good luck Pogo on finding a new sheltie. I will find out if the breeder I have been talking too if her princess is prego by Oct. 4th when she goes in for an x-ray. I am literally crossing fingers and toes. I really want a sheltie and if she is prego around Christmas I will be posting pictures of a new sheltie haha.:lol: Having a new member of the family is sooooo exciting. I honestly can't wait.
 
We too are going to get another sheltie, some time in the spring or early summer.

I really wanted to get a sheltie from our local rescue group, my husband originally agreed but when it came right down to it he just wasn't comfortable with the idea. I was very disappointed, I had a sheltie girl all picked out, her problems weren't too extensive and I was looking forward to training her but my husband was concerned about her issues and health. Since bringing another dog into the house is such a big decision I felt it was something we should both be 100% comfortable with and decided against it.

So instead we've decided that we're going to get a puppy from Sadie's breeder. It will probably be in the spring, early summer of next year and we're both REALLY excited.
 
Thanks everyone for your help! I think I found a good match (so far). He's the same age as Pogo and outgoing-I think that'll help him come out of his shell. Can I get some help as to what questions to ask to determine if this is a good breeder or another BYB'er? As of right now, she says he is AKC registered (but doesn't have a name-like Pogo, Fido...etc), UTD on shots and currently on heartworm preventative. He is not neutered, though. I have provided the link below-maybe ya'll can tell me if it looks legit or not?

The only thing that has me hesitant and thinking they are not as concerned for quality as they are for quantity is that she told me they have 20 Shelties (isn't that a bit much? sounds like a border line puppymill to me).

The other thing that concerns me is her many many spelling mistakes. Examples include "Week-end", "Puppie" (singular), "threw" (should've been 'through'), and a couple of others.:no:

I don't know if bad grammer is a sign of a bad breeder but it would make me hesitant also, simply because its sloppy and unprofessional, making it look like they simply don't care.

A good breeder will not sell you a puppy without first meeting you. I noticed the site says they will ship a puppy anywhere. Shipping is fine but they should insist on meeting you and screening the people that they give their puppies to.

Ask about their health guarantee. A good breeder should tell you their dogs have under gone genetic testing for possible problems (such as hips, eyes, etc.)

Their contract also says a lot about the breeder. The contract from Sadie's breeder not only guaranteed health but also stated if we were ever not able to keep her that we need the breeder's approval of the new home. If we couldn't find a suitable home from someone we knew that the breeder would take would take her back and either keep her or find a home for her. The contract also stipulates that Sadie NEVER end up in a shelter.

Personally, the web page you posted make me a bit nervous but perhaps they just have a bad web site.

ohhh this breaks my heart. My rescue is the only one in 4 states that takes in exclusively older and sicker shelties. These babies are amazing regardless of age or health issues. I got three last year that within a week had trained to sit and obey commands after being told they were impossible to train. The medical issues were really nothing (pancreatitus, broken legs not taken care of, thyroid). I have rehabbed a 13 year old that could not walk and had conjestive heart failure and kidney issues. A lot of love and some medication and time made her the most amazing little girl around. This little girl was the reason I started my rescue. Her personality was amazing and the other shelties I had at that time (3 of them) all protected her fiercely. She brought out the other neglected puppers personalities in full. I think an older pupper is a great thing. I have one that came to me when he was 7 months old. Be prepared for his preteen years here. Fox chewed anything not nailed down, took the omega roll with pride and made all the other dogs blossom. He never gave them a break...making them play with him even if they didn't want to . He is such a gem and a real clown. Unless you are going to breed or show dogs I think the only way to go is with a rescue.
