Weight of my Sheltie?

I recently got my 23 week old sheltie neutered and I noticed on the info sheet the vet gave me that my boy is 6 lbs. This struck me as strange, because when I weighted him on my own scale he was about 10.5 lbs but he was moving a bit so I don't know for sure. 6 lbs seems waaayy too little for a 5-month old puppy, he's just over 12 inches at the withers and the breeder warned me he was going to be on the smaller side, but 6 lbs seems too small for his height.

Also, how much should we feed him? We've been doing Origin Puppy half cup twice a day but he is always trying to steal food and eating random things like rubber bands and sticks (which he throws up later), we're worried he might be hungry and not being fed enough but also worry he might get fat (and he's quite chubby around the stomach.) Any suggestions?
 
6 pounds does sound very small for 12 inches. My puppy is 12.5 inches and weighs a little over 10 pounds.

Maybe they accidentally wrote down the wrong weight? If your pup is underweight you'd be able to feel his ribs.

As far as food, check the recommended feeding amount on the bag's label. A cup a day sounds about right.

Eating and chewing random things is usually a sign of boredom. Puppy always chew things they're not supposed.
 
Is it possibly 6 kg instead of lbs? That would put him at 13.2 lbs which would be a slightly chubby-bellied 12" tall pup like you describe.
 
If I remember, when my pups were on on Orijen they were recommending 1 and 1/3 per day. In an active dog, a pure protein diet will burn off more quickely then a regular diet. "Active" being the operative word.

Given the small size of your pup, you may want to consider upping the feeding. But the real test is the rib test. If you can't feel ribs, then it's time to cut back. If the ribs are too prominent, then its time to beef it up.

6 lbs is very light for a 23 week old pup. I'm thinking your pup should be twice that weight at least! How tall is he?

As Granite says, did you mean kilos instead of pounds?
 
My puppy is 18weeks old and she is 11-11.5" and 6.6lbs. She is also on the small side

weigh yourself on your scale and then pick up your puppy and weigh yourself again. The difference is how much your puppy weighs.
 
Well sometimes computers get it wrong. They didn't enter the new weight and it was from the visit before or it was the wrong weight. Also sometimes puppies lean against the wall or are jumping around on the scale and you don't get an accuate weight.

Do like expoz3d say weight youself and then yourself with the puppy,see if the difference is still 6.5 lbs.

Ember's brother came in to see me for a check up, the front desk staff entered his weight in the computer as 78lbs. OMG I know he's a big shelties but not that big.:eek2: Rewright he was 28lbs. Turns out it was the weight of the Golden that came in at the same time.
 
My vet typed the wrong weight on Bailey's rabies vaccine certificate. It says 3.6 pounds, but she was really 6.6 pounds. Mistakes happen....I hope most vet mistakes are only computer entry errors.
 
Sometimes my vet doesn't update the sheet immediately. He will write the weight down in the chart, but does not get the time to update the computer before giving me the printout. The weight could have been from the previous visit.
 
It's my first time with this vet so it must just be an error. I tried what expoz3d suggested and it turns out he's 10.8 lbs, as I suspected. That darn vet :wink2:
