Weight question

Hi, I have a 6 month old sheltie and he is about 13 inch in height and his weight is 11kgs 24.3pounds, i have been told it is way too heavy. He doesn't look fat, he looks good to me but he is my first sheltie.
What does everyone think?

That sounds heavy to me. Romeo is 15 inches to the withers (if I remembered correctly) and he's 9kg (and can afford to lose abit)! Can you make out the ribs of your pup when you rub your hand across his chest?
With shelties, esp when young, it's a good idea to keep them lean or you risk their bone structures developing poorly and hip problems in the future.
 
I can't really compare very well, since my boy is much bigger...but I do know that he is about the right weight range - and he is almost 19 inches tall and 27 pounds. We might be able to tell if ou post pictures, but with shelties it is harder to tell because of the fur. You should be able to feel his ribs when you dig into his fur...and you should also be able to feel a noticeable waistline.
 
my 14 1/4 inch female weighs 15 pounds perfect weight, and my 16 inch male is 21 pounds he could probably loose a pound or 2. so it sounds like yours could loose a little weight.

24 lbs is definitely too heavy for that height.

I'm also a bit worried about Sadie's weight. I went to get Sadie's heart worm medication yesterday and brought her with me. They decided to weigh her to confirm her weight and I was surprised to find out that she's gained a couple of pounds. She still looks slim but I was hoping to keep her at approx 20-22 lbs. She measures 17.5" at her withers. When she weighed 21 lbs. the vet said that her weight was ideal so I think I'm going to cut back on her food a bit.

Is there a BMI somewhere for dogs/shelties?
 
If you can feel his ribs and when you follow his shape down to his back end his body should go hour glass like. He sounds on the heavy side to me as well. My Kia is 14" and weighs 19 pounds. When my Jewel was with us she was a larger Sheltie. She was 20" and weighed in at 35 pounds. She didn't appear heavy to me either but I guess she was. She was very fast and athletic so I didn't find any harm. The vet said she seemed fine it was not affecting her she was very muscular. Sounded good to me.:wink2: Ask your vet. It does sound a little heavy for a 6 month old with not much height.

This is how Aztec is as well, he has a lot of muscle...he is incredibly athletic - hardly every stops moving :lol:
 
wayyyy to heavy I have a 13 1/2" and she weighs right around 14lbs give or take half a pound. at 13 inches they should weight right about 14 pounds or so. Can you feel his ribs and count each one? How much is he getting for food? What type of food are you feeding him?
 
I agree that this is very heavy, especially for a puppy. The trouble is that at six months old, you don't want to put him on lite food. But you do need to reduce what he's eating most likely. He shouldn't be getting more than 1/2 cup of food twice a day at this point. I would talk with your vet about the safest and healthiest way to reduce his weight without sacrificing the nutrition he needs to keep growing.
 
24 seems very heavy for 13". My 13.25" girl weights 15lbs, and my 13.75" girl weighs 16lbs.
As a general rule, you should be able to feel their ribs easily through a thin layer of fat.
