hello everyone
i am new to this forum, came across a stray, been with us for the last 3 months, found her near a fishing place where she used to come out from the trees only in the night, whenever i used to go fishing, used to take some food for her, one fishing trip, it was raining cats and dogs, and felt sorry for her and decided to bring her home, so built some trust and managed to put a leash round her, she was really scared, as she did try to nip me when i tried to carry her into the car, however when i brought the car nearer, she just jumped in, we feel it was someones dog and just abandoned, sad, anyway, as i live in a tropical country, malaysia, i think the weather here is not really suitable for her, took her to a vet, who didnt identify her as a sheltie or a sheltie mix, its only lately a friend identified her for me as a sheltie probably a mix, any here are few photos, once i figure out how to add photos, anyway, my concern is, i assume, shelties are cold weather dogs, really not suitable for tropical climates, would it ok, if i trimmed her coat, just to cool her off?

thanks caesar

ps how do i add photos?

Hi caesar, shelties actually handle the heat ok compared to some other dog breeds. Just make sure she always has somewhere cool indoors to lie, access to plenty of water, and don't take her out during the hottest parts of the day. I live in Australia where we have a very hot summer (although not tropical where I am) and I've never trimmed my shelties' coats.

You can just post a link to your photos. Good luck with your new girl, and thanks for rescuing her :smile2:.

Sheltie coats actually protect them from the heat. Their double coat insulates the body and keeps it cooler. So trimming your do is not recommended. As Hannah said, fresh water and a place in the shade are best. Keep your pup inside during the heat of the day too.

Welcome. How sad a Sheltie being dumped - I can't imagine there would be many Shelties in Malaysia.

We have members from Singapore, one or two who compete with their dogs in agility. I also know many Shelties in Australia who live in the tropical north. You'll find the Shelties in the tropics don't grow undercoat like dogs in temperate and cold environments. It is the undercoat that keeps the dog warm. Trimming the coat doesn't cool a dog off - dogs don't have sweat glands like us, but Shelties do have fur that stands up (not flat coated) to allow air to circulate. To keep your dog cool ensure the coat is well brushed, and to remove any undercoat, as this will allow air to circulate through the fur. If you clip the coat the loose fur and undercoat aren't removed so the dog can actually be hotter.

Honestly, we've just had several days of 42C and my female kept going outside to sunbake!
