Gabe is actually the number 2 sheltie in the entire country... right under Cirque. He is considered the top winning male for 2010. His tail isn't gay.. just carried somewhat high. I think he is quite a handsome boy and was very pleased with the judges choice.
And, I too think a tail carried always down looks a little strange. :)
Seriously hope a sheltie can place higher up in the group next year... we just don't ever seem to get it.

I keep watching and and rewatching the sheltie group- all of them were beautiful and I kept thinking how the determination was done, and then it hit me, if I stop watching gait and color and stacking and movement... all is left is dog... and Gabe was possibly the only dog that looked like he could care less about what was happening, he behaved like he owned place from the get go... it was the attitude- magnificent.

Camera angles will mess with perception too. He looked fine in the breed rings, I haven't yet watched the group.

I don't know, the German GSD's are not like that, and I know some people have gotten their dogs from Germany. I could go on and on about how some standards for breeds are awful, but I won't!! :winkgrin:

I have to say that the only thing worse then the men handlers in their suits, are the female handlers! What's with the 1980's suits with the flared hip jackets and calf length skirts in blaring colours and the dark hose!? Please, ladies! You can't get more unflattering than that!

What's wrong with with a good quality black pant suit and bright camisole/tee-shirt?
 
I finally got a chance to wath the BIS this afternoon. If I had to choose it would have been the deerhound or the bearded collie.

I think the judge chose right. Not the prettiest of dogs, but the majesty of the dog was overwhelming! I have to say that it actually brought tears to me eyes.

Your black pant suit would be gray with chalk in five minutes flat. :biggrin2: Besides, pantsuits make me look like I'm three feet tall.

eh. People try. Handlers do tend to be more "flashy" or "dressy" (definition of both is up for interpretation) for Westminster, so the "blaring colors" aren't quite so common at everyday shows.

I'm a slim, petite 25-year-old with a closet full of tasteful skirt-suits (cut to above the knee, in acceptable colors, worn with nude hose and dressy, rubber-soled flats) so I'm not defensive. But it bugs me when Westminster rolls around and I hear another round of criticism of the handlers' dress, weight, shape, or shoes.

It's not Barb or anyone in particular; it's just something that I seem to hear every year, and it makes me sad.
