What food should I feed my Sheltie?

Hi All and Happy New Year.

I'm feeding my Sheltie Orijen which is one of the best foods out there however she has gained weight because she doesn't exercise too much although my Shepherd would love her to play more. The organic petfood store I get my food from told me to just decrease her food but I was wondering if I should switch to a food for overweight dogs. Any Suggestions?

Thanks!

Orijen is high quality dog food.

I know it is a high protein food, which is good for dogs who exercise a lot, but since yours doesn't.... I'm not sure. Does protein turn to fat if it's not burned off? if that is the case, then you'd probably want to switch to food that doesn't have such high protein.

Or maybe you're just overfeeding her. She might need a good 30 minute walk a day too

When Annie Laurie gets tubby, I cut down on the Orijen and supplement with green beans. Works well.

Ref protein questions, go to the Orijen site and read the White paper -- explains a whole lot!

If Orijen works for your dog I would just stick with it and feed less. I do not know how much you feed your dog. Our sheltie, Mally was weighing too much the vet said to cut him to 1/2 cup twice a day. That is what we did and he was able to eat the food he likes and agrees with him, just a lesser amount. I do take Mally for walks around the block as well. Also, he did lose the weight he needed to lose.

Orijen is a good quality food so if your dog is otherwise doing well on it I'd first try decreasing the amount. If the weight doesn't come off then consider a lower fat food.

We also went the route of adding green beans and feeding a bit less when Bentley started gaining weight. It was very effective (coupled with exercise).
