What is a healthy Sheltie weight?

I am not understanding how mine seem so much heavier than everyone elses! the vet thinks that they are at a healthy weight, i just think its funny.

Lynn 17 inches and 32lbs
Ruckus 20 inches and 45lbs

go figure!
I know no one has a sheltie as tall as Ruckus though (yes he is full blooded, i know his parents) but I know you guys have 17 inchers.

It is going to depend on different things. Dogs with really long legs are going to weigh less than dogs that tall with more body. If your dogs are in good shape and have muscle on them, that also could make them weigh more.

I'd say Koji falls into this category with Sadie and Bacca. He's 17" (or so) and right now is at 23lbs. Vet said he'd be better at 20-21lbs. He's tall, lean, and long.


Which got me thinking. We should measure the LENGTH of the dog and maybe the circumference of their ribcage too.


Miko is 15.5". Last weigh-in, he was 21lbs. You can't really feel his ribs, but you can feel his spine. You can a definite waistline. But when you pick up Koji, he FEELS lighter.



Koji reminds me of a coyote pup. Long-legged, thin, long bodied.

1) 20 lbs seems light. Bacca is like Koji - long and lean - and still weighs in at 26 lbs. I can't imagine him losing weight

2) I agree - length has to be a factor. Bacca is much longer in body and longer in neck than Indy though about the same height at the whithers.

3)It's funny, but I've noticed the same with Indy. He's the same weight as Bacca, but more compact and for that reason, he seems lighter!!!

I measured Smudge wrong, so I'm not exactly sure how tall he is. I thought you measured from their feet to their head. So I'll have to remeasure him. I'm thinking he's probably around 15 inches or so. He weighs 17.5 pounds and isn't overweight at all. I think I should measure him longways, too. He looks like a corgi or a weiner dog.

So, see first they look like a frog because their legs are too long, then they look like a fox, and eventually they look like a weiner dog. Next up is a full grown sheltie, right?

One time I was in the supermarket and saw this guy walk in with a corgi following him and thought, that's a bit rude bring a dog in to a food supermarket. Then when it was my turn at the checkout the register girl said 'do you know that dog' and I looked down and there was Tully! It wasn't a corgi I had seen, it was my sheltie! From behind she looked like a Corgi. She had jumped out the car window and followed the guy through the automatic doors, had a little wander around then found me at the check out very pleased with her self!

I have a ute (I think you call them pick-up trucks) so its a long way off the ground - little ratbag! She was sooo pleased with herself though, tail wagging away and a big sheltie smile I couldnt be angry with her!

I was wondering, because my truck is pretty tall. I'm 5'4, and I can don't even have to squat to sit down! I just slide in! It's a good thing she didn't hurt herself. I would have been afraid that somebody would have stole her.

Did you check her pockets to make sure she didn't "borrow" any candy from the front registers? Stay away from the candy asile, Tully! Once they lure you in there's no turning back!
