What is it?

I was brushing out Logan's ruff yesterday and noticed several areas of irritation and small light red crust/flakes.

Not sure what it is. He has been scratching at it... not often. He is on Frontline so I know it is not fleas. I had him professionally groomed a few weeks ago. Could it be irritation from the residue of shampoo/cream rinse that did not get rinsed out that caused it?

I put Neosporin on it for now. Not sure if I should visit the vet or just bath him myself to see if it clears up. Thoughts?

Do you know if the groomer used a different shampoo this time? Is his skin dry or moist feeling in these irritated areas?

When I saw your pictures, I was sure they were our dog. The mark is identical to ones she gets. Prior to changing her food, we thought it was from the food but now believe it is stress as she gets them after grooming and when we travel. She does not like either of those things.Hers are mostly on her lower abdomen and sometimes a little bit higher and often take a 7-10 days to disappear.

2nd sheltie

Hard to tell exactly from a picture. But it does look similar to what happened with my 2nd sheltie, after I fed that food that triggered the seizures in her. Her skin broke out in similar patches, on the front and back of her legs and her tummy. The Vet at the time said allergy, gave me topical stuff that made her patches WORSE-they felt hot to the touch when before they weren't and they looked angry and inflamed, ugh. Can't remember what it was but I tossed it...cleaned it with witch hazel and applied raw honey from beekeeper friend, which improved the condition almost overnight. I prefer the natural approach as you know from my posts She was older then, and I don't really know if her system couldn't fend off stuff or what. Good luck with finding a solution!!!!

Actually, it felt more oily than the rest of his coat... l think it was residue of the conditioner not rinsed thoroughly enough.

Well, he is more comfortable with me grooming him and does not like the groomer either...

I was surprised to see the area is not as raw and red today. I think the neosporin helped!

WOW, I am so sorry your sheltie had to go through such trauma! Does witch hazel sting them? I can get some from the drug store. He is so spoiled I would hate to put anything on that would sting.

In my oppinion it seems an allergic reaction appears similar to dermatitis. My previous dog had that kind of reactions.

I think it would be due to the shampoo...

It is fortunate that you've caught it on time because if he scratches it can be difficult to heal that kind of wounds.

I used a Q-tip to apply the Neosporin yesterday...
I may re-treat again today to make sure it heals fast!
Do not want him to have a reason to scratch more!

Missy got something like this last fall on her back, near her tail. The conclusion we came to was she probably got bit by some sort of bug, or just had an itch, and she kept messing with it (chewing most likely), and it got scabby. It went away after a few medicated baths. She's on Trifexis year-round so I knew it wasn't fleas. I have a tea tree oil spray that I've used because it's supposed to help with hot spots and itching. It helped, just smells bad lol.
