What is the most interactive toy for a sheltie puppie?

The whole fetch thing has to be a rumor. I have one dog who can't get enough of it (and she basically came that way with not much training), and one who doesn't get it at all. But, I know plenty of shelties who fetch.
 
Most of the shelties here are fetching fools. Ember doesn't get but she will retrieve for obedience. Vogue doesn't get it and is too submissive to get into the middle of the craziness anyway. Ash would rather play kill the carrier. But Grizz, Pike, Justice(not so much anymore but when he was younger), Adele and Birch are intense. Diva was the most driven of all of them, she would fetch until she passed out.

I would say the majority of our puppies have shown strong natural fetching skills(chase, grab and return)even at really young age. Birch was retrieving at 4 weeks. So I think there is some genetics at play.
 
Blithe loves to play tug, throw and retrieve, but NOT outside. He will not play outside regardless of how much he enjoys running in and out his dog door. He just stands there when I throw a ball and looks at me as if saying "You expect me to go get that ball? You're nuts!"

However he does love to play inside with any of several types of balls he has, but by far the favorite is the Kong tennis ball that is just small enough to get in his mouth. Lately I've been having problems with my shoulder and arm (rotator cuff from repetitive movements = throwing a ball?) so I can't play as much as he'd like, so he's taken to dangling the ball by the loose fuzz and throwing it around himself. So far he hasn't broken anything.

He still loves the rubber 10 or 12 inch kid's ball and will have a great time pushing it all over the house with his feet, ALWAYS with another toy in his mouth while he's doing it.
 
I recently purchased the "tug-a-jug" for my sheltlie puppy. He doesn't quite have the hang of it yet, but seems to like it.

As for fetching shelties, my previous 2 were both fetching fiends. My newest, as he is living in the house as an only dog, doesn't have the encouragement/competition from others, and I'm not sure what kind of retriever he'll be. He will fetch a stuffed toy or tennis ball, but his attention span isn't long, and his excitement over the whole ordeal is rather muted.
 
For Dickens the best interactive toy is a little black Schipperke named Callie. He thinks of nothing else when she's about. Pick her up and he'll look up at you with an anxious look as if to say, "what are you doing with my toy?" Since she usually visits on an average of once a month I've taken to calling her "Plaything of the Month."

If you get some type of tubbing you can lean on the couch you can teach him to send the ball down the tube and run and fetch it. We've done that with honey a few times, she gets super excited about it.
 
Actually a nice toy for the dog if you still want to interact but don't want to have to be running around is a kids play tube, honey loves chasing my fingers (or my toes if my hands are busy) along the outside of the fabric. I have a pop up light tent that we turned into a sleeping spot for her made of the same type of material and she is all about doing the same thing in there.

Toys that do not need the use of a human and the puppie can play with on her own.

She chews the bones like the orange ones in a day!!

I know this is not recommended, but I need to get my work done at home while she can enertain her self.

I got some old socks with holes in them, rolled them up in a ball, and stuffed cookies in them. That will keep her busy for a while.

She was digging holes in the lawn then I put spackle wire mesh on the ground over the holes and forces it down with large nails. She does not even walk on the mesh now which is good. Grass will now be able to grow though the mesh.

You know, this may be something nice to control where the dog walks to keep them out of areas where they should not go. It may work for my dog, but not necessarily for others.
