What tool do I need to brush out this undercoat?

I tried that ONCE, and never again. I kept brushing, and brushing and fur kept coming out so I thought - great- then I noticed a small bald spot forming!:eek2: My last sheltie had a very, very thick undercoat, and it was impossible to brush out, but that was not the way to do it. I am not sure if anyone here has tried it, but I don't recommend it. Now I just use a few different brushes and a comb, and do it the old fashioned way.
 
That's a tool that you really need to know what you're doing with. Sure, it'll take undercoat out, but you can also remove the top coat, and create all sorts of lumps and bumps.
If you just want to remove the undercoat without needing a whole lot of skill, why not just get a furminator?
 
Yes I agree with hope the mars is good but you have to watch and know what you are doing it will take out top and undercoat!!:eek2:

I use a rake on mine to take out the undercoat. I tried the furminator but was not happy with the results although it works well on my cats! and other people have had great results with it on the forum just not me.
 
I agree with Lightplum. There is nothing better than a plain old shedding rake. It will only take out undercoat that is loose, and won't strip your dog's fur. I tried the furminator too but didn't like it at all, although others love it. Using a rake may take a bit of time, but it's worth it, and when they're shedding you can just use the rake if you're pressed for time and then do a once-over with your slicker brush.

I'd recommend either one of these. I use the single row rake and it works very well. And they're cheap!

I have a rake (single row). I find that it takes a lot of time to get the undercoat out with it. My shelties are not happy about that. I am looking for something quicker.
I do have a furminator that I use on the horses - I will try that.
 
I have a furminator and I think it's great.

I don't go hard at it though, like they show on the video. I use a rather light touch, because I'm afraid of stripping off the top coat too. I also slightly dampen the fur, either with water or dry shampoo. I also really only use it on the rump. I find just a good (labourious!) line brushing works well for the other parts of the body.
 
I recently bought a Love 2 pet 2-in-1 grooming tool - it is a rake on one end, and then you 'flip' it to a deshedding tool (sort of like a furminator I think). I love it. It seems to really get the under coat and I find it much faster than a brush and comb. I still use a brush and a comb, but not as much.

I also use a double row rake for Deska - teflon coated (Vista) as advised to me by a Rough Collie breeder - Deska has a huge undercoat. Tully's coat is actually very soft and light so I use a Lawrence tendercare slicker brush.

Also when they are shedding I wash mine more frequently, take them outside and blow out a lot of hair with a dryer and a rotating teeth comb.
 
I also have a furminator and love it. It's never removed top coat or created bald spots, it just removes what's coming out. But as BarbV said, use it gently and ignore the online videos. Use long, gentle strokes and watch that it doesn't pull when some clumps of undercoat come out. It also helps to spritz the coat with water or doggie leave in conditioner.

I almost forgot to mention, if you do decide to get a furminator they can be very expensive. Buy one on ebay, you'll pay half as much!
