What's in a name?

well, let's see, my family has used a few methods to name dogs...
First, Rascal, he'd already had his name when we adopted him which suited him well unfortunately. Then we had Duke, who'd already been named as well. Next came Folgan, he was a German shepherd so we used a German name which meant obey. Soon, we got Sam, which we thought suited him one we got to see him first. After that, was my puppy that I named on the ride home from the breeder because she had striking markings. Next, was Nos (Nitrous Oxide System) which was one of our most original names because it described his speedy manner and we'd like to see that on a pedigree "Hoop and Holler Kennel's Nitrous Oxide System". Last of all, was my sheltie Lucy which happened to be named when my dad was saying random names like "Margeret!" But he said Lucy and it immediatly stuck with her as Lucy Lou. Just go with it, I say, like all my dogs. If it comes instantly, so be it. If it takes time like Nos, then go with it! You'll know when you have the perfect name!

Phebe's registered name is Wandren Park As You Like It. I wanted something that had a British Isles sound and was hoping that As You Like It might inspire to have a biddable nature.

Also, her call name is the name of a character in the Shakespeare play who is a shepherdess, so it seemed fitting for a Sheltie.

I keep a list of names that I might like to use if/when I get another pup. One of my current favorites is Scoot. I think that would be a good call name for agility.

This is the most fantastic thread as it's something I have often wondered about. :biggrin2:I have really loved some of the names on here and you seem to be far more original in names than we are in the UK. (I like unusual names for dogs but much prefer traditional names for kids!:wink2:)

I named Revel because it means celebration/happy and I was so overjoyed to get him. I was working in a shop at the time and there was a sweet of this name and it completely fitted. I picked the name some months before acatually getting the puppy and in the interim, used to go around muttering "Revel, come", "Revel, wait" and even "Revel, No" to test it out!!

Revel's registered name is 'Dream Lover' which is perfect as I interpreted it as the lover of dreams, but he is also a bit of a ladies man!

Yogi was not acatually my choice. His litter name was Pan which suited him very well as he was a deadpan pup. His brother was Piper and has kept the name. I wanted to call my pup 'Verdi' after one of my favourite composers but was out voted by his breeder and family. He ended up as Yogi because as a pup he looked like a bear.

Yogi's registered name is Wildest Dreams because never in my wildest dreams did I intend owning a sable. Again it suits because he is rather a nutter!

Merlin was beautifully named, his dad was Little Houdini and his mum was Sweet Illusion so it followed easily. His registered name is Little Illusion, which describes him perfectly.

My rabbits nearly all have had 'S' names as 'Snapdragon' is the affix. The two latest are Siegfried and Sibyl.

I don't usually have problems choosing registered names for the dogs but call names can take months to perfect!

I do have a name lined up for the next pup but as it has changed several times over the course of the last few months am keeping it under wraps until formal introductions are made!

When we were kids, my sister and I named everything we owned. We went through a stage of naming everying with an H - lab named Hildegard, cat named Hezekiah, calf named Harold.

When I got Hamish, my sister had named him that (it is Scottish for James, which was her then-husband's name). When I got Noah, Noah means comfort. He was brought into our hearts 10 days after I lost Hamish. His CKC registered name was Arbreglen's Noah Bradley (the Bradley for my Dad). When I lost Noah, I got Emma two weeks later. Emma means comfort. Her CKC registered name is Aberdale's Missy Emma Marie - Dad called me Missy as a child, Marie was for my Mom. (Interestingly, the breeder would have called her daughter Emma and her own middle name is Marie). When I got Liam, which means strong protector, she had called him Slick as he needed a name. His CKC registered name is Aberdale's Smooth as Glass. I always look at what the name means when I choose a name. Emma brought us comfort. Liam is my protector in all things.

We named Sandstorm based on his fathers name, Perfect Storm, and because we live on sand- Cape Cod beaches. We thought it was well suited, and the breeder liked it. It was important for us to name our sheltie partly after his sire, as his breeder was very proud of the fact that she had Perfect Storm as the sire.

I am just loving this thread!! I think it's the second time we've played this game, but it never grows old.

Layla (whelping name Boo-Boo): When we knew we were going to get a female Sheltie puppy, I wanted Juliet, but DH pushed for Layla. Since he was being so wonderful about us getting her, I agreed. Imagine my surprise when I learned that Layla in English is Juliet! She is registered as Layla of Nattering Springs. Other name: Principessa.

Bits (whelping name Lady): Within a week of getting Layla, we realized we needed another. We knew our breeder had another litter in the hopper, so I contacted her and put my dibs in for a puppy from that litter. Oops -- false pregnancy. But the breeder had a puppy from Layla's aunt; the whole family had fallen in love with her but it looked like she'd be too small to show. They wanted the "perfect" home for her. I'd seen the newborns when went to meet Layla, and the tiniest one was adorable. We had been referring to Layla as "Little Bits" as a pet name, so we just named this one Little Bits. She is registered as Little Bits of Nattering Springs. Other name: Bitst Boodle.

Annie Laurie
(originally Annie): She came to us as Annie, but I wanted to add another name to make her feel special. We also kept her Lats name in there, so she is Annie Laurie Morgan Lafferty. "Other name: Annie Belle.

Beckon (whelping name Lance): Beckon 's name was one I'd been holding in reserve for a male when I got one. His breeder loved it, so he was registered as Norwood Beckoning Breeze.

Hopefuls:

When I get my show boy, he will be named in honor of the profession of my father, grandfather, and DH's grandfather and, at one time, himself -- railroaders! He'll be Norwood The Trainmaster, call name Eddie after my Dad and Brad's Grandfather.

I got Indy at 10 months old and he was already named....Indy it was and is.

Bacca is a longer story.

My daughter died almost 3.5 years ago and my forever pup Timber, followed her just a month later.

I knew, right away, that I would want another pup, preferably Sheltie, but my son balked at "replacing Timber". We looked at other breeds but it always came back to a Sheltie.

We finally found one. I let Ryan choose the name to help him bond with the new pup (after all our grief it just seemed right to let Ryan have some control). He was named Chewbacca because he used to make these little mewing noises just like on Star Wars.

I decided that Chewbacca or Chewie were not good names for a Sheltie. So I started to do research on Bacca as a name. Bacca or Bacchus was the greek god of wine. The state of Bacchus is a state of frenzy - that is, Sheltie zoomies. It just seemed to fit. So Bacca it became.

I always have fun with the girl's names. Usually vetoed by Tofu Pup. She is better at names. The males always have a one word or quick name...ie.,
Trade Mark, Maritime. It is easier when people breed to your dog to just say the name, and people know. People who don't always know the call name, can just say "Maritime". For the first few years of Musashi, people would say "I bred to Pop Star". Over the years, everyone learned he was just Musashi.
Being here in Connecticut, we follow the University of Ct. Womens basketball team. They are huge here in the Northeast. The number 1 player nationally for several years was Maya Moore, until she graduated this past spring. So, the puppy we are bringing out this year is "Rabbit Run Just One Moore", and her call name is Maya. She will debut in a couple of weeks. A very red sable and white girl by AM/CA CH Rabbit Run Cindahope Fair Trade.
Of all the sheltie names I have ever heard over the years, my favorite is
"Robert Red Furred", a sable boy.

I am a big fan of mystery/crime fiction and one of my favorite authors is Raymond Chandler. I named my dog after one of his protagonists, Philip Marlowe. His registered name is Private Eye and his call name is Marlowe.

Indy: Our first sheltie, now a sheltie angel at the bridge. When Russell and I were looking at puppies in a litter a fat, placid puppy and the little energetic runt were the two available. I sat down on the floor and handed the fat, placid boy to Russell and said "here, you play with Porky for a while and I'll play with Indy (because the puppy was into everything) and in a bit we'll switch." Russell was 5 at the time and as far as he was concerned, those names were written in stone. We chose the runt, and he became Meadowmorn Indy Sport Legend.

Emma: As Indy aged, we decided to get a new pup as a present for Russell and to hopefully perk Indy up (it did!). Russ chose his girl, and debated names during the drive back home. He had just seen the Avengers movie and apparently Uma Thurman in black leather made an impression on him, so he chose Emma as the call name. She had a little Q-tip shaped white mark on her face and Russ liked that QT was Q-tip and "cutie." Also, I took to calling the puppy a squirt but I pronounced it "stwert" like my boss's daughter. So Emma's registered name is Hampton's QT Emma Stwert.

Figaro: This is a case where I had decided on the name before I saw the pup. I had my mind set on getting a black male sheltie and naming him Figaro. My husband was dead set against any color sheltie other than sable, right up until he held little Figgy and he was a goner in an instant. We got Figaro from a breeder in the mountains of Tennessee whose accent was HUGE and Alan couldn't understand her directions at all, LOL. He put me on the phone with her and I did only marginally better as she said "just take the hardtop road around the mountain and then turn on bar branch road." I said "ummmmmmm can you spell that?" She said "you spell it BAR." I said "I'm sorry, our connection isn't good...did you say bear or..." and she said "I said BAR every time." So I told Alan that she was located on Bear Branch Road. He gave me a look as I'd had her on speaker phone and he'd heard BAR just like I had. But sure enough, the GPS had no Bar Branch Rd in that town but did have Bear Branch. He was wondering aloud how I'd gotten Bear from that sound and so I sang the Davy Crockett song to him the whole way to the breeder's house "kilt him a bar when he was only three..." By the time we were riding home with Figaro we had decided on the registered name of Figaro Bear Crockett Greene.

Sasha: Sasha came to us in terrible shape at the age of 13 months already registered as Mrs. Dash Fairy's Revenge with a call name of Dashy. We tried out a few other names and settled on Sasha, although we're just as likely to call her Cha-Cha.

Newton: Newton came to us in terrible shape at the age of 15 months already registered as Lil Boy Vegas and the elderly gentleman who owned him was trying to call him Pardner; but he did not respond to this name. We tried out a few names and settled on Newton in honor of Wayne Newton. I am not a Wayne Newton fan, but he is a Vegas institution. My husband has great respect for Wayne Newton after he played in a band on the small stage in the same casino as Wayne Newton on the large stage....something to be said for a fellow that can handle 8 shows a week year round non-stop.

Zoey: Zoey was born here, and her litter name was Noel. After we decided that she was here to stay, we renamed her Zoey with a registered name of Lavendel Zola Greene Thumbelina.
