What's in a name?

I like theme names or meaningful names.

My first sheltie was named Brandy (Alexander). When I decided to get another sheltie, I wanted to continue the alcohol theme and name my puppy after liquor or a drink. I also wanted to honor Brandy by naming my new puppy with a "B" name. Bailey was an easy choice. :biggrin2: Her AKC name is Madam Basil (a nickname I gave her) On The Rocks.

I have a couple of other alcohol related names picked out for when I get another dog. I don't know if I'm going to continue with the alcohol theme though. If not, I do have other names in mind. I want my new dog's name to not be some random name I like or heard. It'll be a name from a favorite song, movie, TV show or something to do with the dog's color, personality or day it was born or came home (if it's near a holiday).

Moms dog Miki means "small" in a Alaskan Indian language, and she is a small American Eskimo.
When I moved in we wanted another name that didn't end in a "IE". Out of nowhere Mom suggested Everett, and we knew it was right.
His namesake was a dear gentleman I met during my time in North Dakota. He was in his early 90's when I met him, still drove, kept his yard spotless. Helped his son harvest the farm fields. He was married to Emma and they were the sweetest couple. Barely 5' tall, he would say "They say the first 100 years are the hardest" I took him to a threshing show; and I had the best tour guide ever. This is a man who plowed from a horse and saw the tractor take over. "I moved to North Dakota in 1913" I would ask him questions of the depression and the dust bowl, so interesting. He made it to 100 and drove himself to the hospital for a check up and was admitted. He never came home.
Even tho a new niece is named Emma, If my next sheltie is a female it will be named Emma.

My first cat was named Tolkien. He was all black, and J.R.R Tolkien is my favorite author....

Ashe is an all gray cat, but i named him after a character from a book named Ashe who is half dragon/half human who wears a mist gray cloak. it fits him...

Luna, well initially we were going to get a male and name him Baltar, a character from a show who is short, handsome, clever, and insanely smart, i thought it would fit a sheltie perfectly. Once we decided on a girl, we needed a girl name. I don't really like human names for pets, so I thought it was going to be challenging to find a non-princessey super girly girl name. The BF popped up with Luna which we both really liked (for harry potter and sailor moon) but it fit her perfectly! She has this white spot on her bum, which we call her cutie mark (my little pony anyone?) and it looks like a moon on the black sky.

Sca is short for Scathan Coimhead or Irish Gaelic for mirror gazer (closest I could get to Shetlandic) I figured I could shorten it to a good nickname but he gets called Sky and Scott (by northeners :confused2:) instead of his name real often. His name came from his utter fascination with his reflection. Before he was even home he had checked himself out in a mirror already. I though on it a while and then found a translation that worked. Funny part is I figured he would grow out of the mirror thing but to this day he still has a mirror in the living room to play with (last night he was spin barking at mirror Sca)

#2 MIGHT have a name but I will have to see him before it is official. Most of my dogs got their name because it felt like it fit or had a reason. Dow was named after Dow chemical since he had fleas horrifically bad and got doused and was a chemical waste dump (paramited twice even though you are not supposed to do it to puppies) Funny thing is he never had another flea for the rest of his life

I'm excited when you get baby #2 to hear what his name is. I'm the same way. I have an idea of what I want my future dog(s) names to be, but I hold it close and I'm not telling many people until it becomes more official. I would need to meet the puppy first as well to make sure the name fit

These names are so creative I applaud you!! Funny!

first dog, murphy, came w/ his name, thought it fit him so we kept it.

second dog, foxy, named after a character in a book i was reading.

pupper - originally named angel. adopted as an adult dog, she had been trained every bad habit possible by her previous owner. had to change her name to... something else.

jesse - i just liked the name. held onto it for yrs until i found a dog to bestow it upon.

haruki - been going thru phases obsessed w/ japanese. means sunlight and life, also kinda sounds like it denotes springtime to me. and my last dog was named emerald spring (jess's registered name).

I saw a picture of my first sheltie puppy at 8 weeks and decided she needed an Irish name. I searched forever and finally stumbled across "Daeka". However, I now cannot find that name anywhere and when I search for the meaning of it a Russian or Korean company gets pulled up. Nevertheless, Daeka loves her name and prances around when you repeat it quickly.

I recently rescued a stray pregnant cat and when she had her litter we used well known cities. London and Dublin (two of the kittens we kept) and there was Kendall (named after the actual town I live in) and Rome and Berlin (Berlin and Dublin were both solid black, I like to think they were twins. :smile2:)

I am in search of a sheltie boy and I would love to name him Dorian, after Dorian Gray from "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde.
