When did your sheltie start to bark?

So I have heard from several Sheltie owners that their quieter dogs found their voice around one year of age. Our pup, Shelby, is just 7 months now and barks VERY RARELY (maybe one time every other week) and only if provoked by something really interesting. He knows how and can do so easily, just doesn't and there are plenty of things to bark at around our house! Is this a common? Do pups generally seem to learn to bark more at some point or do they usually stick to the personality and "barkiness" they have had since day one. (we are good friends with the breeder and he has always been extremely quiet, even in a high energy/noisy litter)

Just curious if I should expect to see Shelby change a bit as he grows up, or if he might just be a quiet Sheltie, which we would prefer :smile2: (not that we would/could love him any less).

I would say our Shelby really found her voice around a year or so. She is not as vocal as our previous sheltie but she definitely barks when she hears a noise outside or someone is walking past the house. She will most definitley bark at other dogs too. We are taking a rally class and tonight we reviewed the rules. I now know we can not do this for competition because we would be disqualified for excessive barking. She sits in the crate barking at the other dogs as they run the course because she is so excited.

Oh yeah she also likes to chase the big mean airplanes and big birds. Thank goodness she keeps them away:lol:

Lets see I have video of Birch barking at 2 weeks I think his eyes were just opening. He has been a mouth all his life.

Justice didn't bark until I got Ember so he was almost 4yrs.

Ember started barking around 4 months I think. Diva I always remember as a mouth.

All my bark know quiet but if one goes they all go now. Sigh. :( Ember and Diva go back and forth as to who is going to be all mouth for the day. Birch is actually pretty quiet, though at Dawn's he was in rare voice and def. overstimulated by Hartley.

Chloe started barking when we got Dandie. She was 16 months old.

I am not sure if it was because we got another, or that she just finally started barking.

Dandie just always barked.

Vinca was a little over one year old when she started to bark.

a little over 8 months?
He was so quiet and then it all went to heck... hehehe
ohhh the excitement of a sneeze, a vacuum cleaner, agility, me laughing, me crying, brushing teeth... and so on

Bentley has always barked since we had him (got him at 7 months). Lexi didn't start really barking until she was around 2.

Thanks for sharing you're experiences!

So for those of you who had a quiet Sheltie who went noisey...did you tell them 'no' or try to discourage the barking? Was it ever successful?

What's your favorite thing about your Sheltie? I love when Shelby plays hide-and-seek in our yard, it is adorable when his little face pops around the corner or around the tree :smile2:

My nine week old sheltie barks when playing. He's a sweetie-pie with the best little personality. :)

I don't know about Hamish, Liam or Natalie as they were older when I got them and already were barking.

Noah I wasn't around much during the week as we were in the process of moving and I was working in our new location. I do believe he started barking young.

Emma started barking just after I got her at 10 weeks - so it must have been around the three months' mark. I just love the puppy bark, but the older dogs' bark can be trying at times.

When I first brought Beau home from the ASPCA he was three. He didn't bark for the first 5months that I brought him home. I guess he was shut down from the pound experience. He still doesn't bark much. He will bark when there is someone in the hallway. then I go to the door and tell him that no one is coming in and he quiets down.

He's a smart dog though because, he knows my neighbors footsteps and he won't bark at my neighbor who lives above me, but, if she brings someone with her then he'll bark, Same with my neighbor down stairs.

He will bark at the maintenance people in the hall. but, that's about it. And generally all I have to do is let him know that momma knows they are there and its' okay and he stops
