When does a sheltie's coat "grow out"?

don't wish for a thicker coat...My guy Tiks only 9 months old(in these pics) sable merle and this is what i have to deal with.He was a BYB dog though I know the owner and parents well.All purebred just dad had no papers,sure wish I could get some for him!Only real issue I have is the hair rt at the back base of each ear like to matt,brush it out and next day its already starting to twist.Is it evil to trim a bit of the hair off at that spot?ps...the bi -blk female in the pic will be 5 this year.

hey spazzydog, try baby powder, that prevents mats. I have had to cut out small mats under Buffy's ear once or twice... you just cut through the middle and then pull the rest out.

Also try a normal brush, I use a bristle brush, as its less harsh and you can brush it through. If the matts are thick use scissors to slice through the knot (in the direction of the fur) this will help loosen the matt and get the knots around the snipped parts out.

here's a picture of Bailey last month @ 10 months old. I think she has a long and fluffy coat. Does this mean she has her adult coat or is it still going to grow? This picture makes her look like she has such stumpy legs lol

But yep, 2 to 3 years it can take for us to grow in our coats.

Noah looks so good. I'm so jealous. Sometimes I wonder if Diva will ever get her coat. She was a fluffy puppy and lost it all at just over a year.

Fluffy is the same way (fluffy puppy), and she just won't look right if she is deflated...
