when people leave?????

whenever we have people leave our place, bubbles will start barking and jump up and actually put the door handle in her mouth. she only does this for a minute or two. what can we do to stop it. we have tried interrupting this behavior. im just worried about her poor teeth getting broke..

My dogs used to attack the vacuum kind of like this. What I would do is yell out "AHH!!!" and then go to the door and then walk towards them/into them causing them to back up. My dogs were able to learn that what they were doing is an unwanted behavior after doing this a few times. If that doesn't work, bring out the coins in a can! lol
 
Do your visitors give her any attention before they leave and is there any behaviours that usually occur where you can tell she is getting worked up?

Deska hates family members leaving the room (even when we are at someone elses place) and will spin and fret that 'one of his flock' has broken away. I dont have the same problem when other guests leave. So what we do is give him a distraction when someone goes. We do a few things like someone calls him back from the door and talks to him, or we leave a couple of treats (usually just bits of kibble) away from the door or the person leaving throws the treats as they go. The idea is he learns that someone leaving is a good thing - although its hard because he has such a strong herding instinct.

I would also tone down departures. For example, say your goodbyes sitting down not standing around esp not around the door. She is probably getting a bit worked up before you even get to the door, hence the strange behaviour of having a go at the door.

Keeping departures low key and giving her distractions should help, then eventually you can fade things out. At least she is young and it should be easily trained out of her.

You can also ask for an alternate behavior, such as sit or down, as the guests are leaving.

I've been working with Snap on a similar thing and am finally making headway. My office at work is gated. From time to time, as a visitor was leaving my office, he would charge and throw himself at the gate. I was never been sure whether this was a herding thing or barrier frustration.

I now ask for another behavior from him before visitors get to the gate and am rewarding his successful behavior "big time" . In his case, the behavior is to go to his bed. He may not do it automatically yet, but he will look at me now and wait for an instruction.
 
i never thought about her picking up on leaving. i have noticed she sometimes does it and sometimes not. now thinking about it, if people talk to us at the door she does this but if someone just picks up and leaves without saying anything she really doesnt notice it all the time. but thanks for all the ideas. its things to work on. like i said its not bad other than worrying about her breaking her teeth on the door handle.
 
Mine bark at leaving guests. heck, they bark at any change in the flock, and especially to get my attention away from the phone onto them -- show offs! yesterday I was on the line with the hospital accounting representative fixing an insurance glitch when they started up. In my most professional voice I said, "Excuse me one moment," and covered the mouthpiece.

"SHADDUP!!!"

"Now, what was that again?"

The woman just completely broke up.
 
Maggie barks at people coming and going, ya know she has to keep the sheep in order. She also does circles around them. LOL
