Where did my puppy go?

For the past few days I've had this creeping feeling that something was off with my pup, and yesterday my suspicions were confirmed. My 8.5 month old girl is in season.

I've kind of been expecting it for a couple of weeks, I know her half-sister came in at 8 months and we live with an attentive young male, but I'm still puzzled. I could've sworn she was still a baby just last week!

She's even starting to LOOK mature now!

She is so pretty! Sad when the babies grow up, but she's not an adult yet. Justus just turned 4 and I still call him my puppy!

she is beautiful:yes:

Cran and Dix at 5 no longer get called puppy- but that's really because there's now puppy Jocu (2 yrs) and puppy Destin (19 mths)

Lacey just turned 8 months and I'm hoping she goes a little longer before going into heat. One of her sisters already went, but because she is so small hopefully she will wait a little longer.

Sparta is just gorgeous! They grow up so quickly, don't they? I can't believe that my Enzo will be 11 months in a couple weeks!

Don't get me wrong, she'll always be a puppy in my eyes (and in most others, benefits of having a 12 pound dog), but she insists.

I've got my fingers crossed for you! Both Sparta and her half-sister are right around 13 inches and Sparta is smallest in her litter, so it didn't help them much, but maybe you'll have more luck.

At least we'll get it over with now, so maybe we'll be able to visit the show ring in two months time!

Aww, she is lovely! She seems about the same size and age as my Bonnie. How exactly were you able to tell her heat had started? For the last few weeks I've been keeping my eyes open but I'm just so worried I'll miss the signs :/

I understand it can vary greatly with individuals, and I know a few females who have "run in silence", where the owner has hardly been aware of it at all. I think it's usually pretty obvious though.

A couple of weeks before, she seemed a little different, although I couldn't quite put my finger on it. In hindsight I think she started acting a little tougher thanks to the hormones. Sparta doesn't mind me handling her and flipping her over, so checking for blood or swelling was made a part of our evening routine when I noticed something was happening. Then about a week or so before, the aforementioned male (who is 2 years old and intact) started to get more and more interested in her rear half. Two days before the first drop of blood she stopped peeing normally on walks, instead she'd just sprinkle - little and frequently, like marking. The day before was a "yep, this is it"-moment for me, when she squatted a total of eleven times in about 45 minutes. I wouldn't have noticed the blood until several days in if I wasn't checking, she keeps nice and clean on her own.
