Will my sheltie like agility?

Just a note -- if you buy a set of equipment -- I know this sounds obvious but it may not be -- whatever you do, don't leave a chute in particular with the dog unattended. A million years ago some aussie folk from the rescue my dogs came from lost their dog because it ran into the chute which was left out for a short time while the family had lunch and the dog got tangled and suffocated. Other items in the set can be fallen from or otherwise cause injury if left unattended -- just thought I would mention since, you know, things happen and we get lax about dutifully putting things and way and such.

Oh wow. That's terrible! Thank you so much for telling me. I will be sure to put it away properly. That's tragic for the poor family. And worse, the dog had no chance nor was it his/her fault. Unfortunately, a lot of the kits that I've found are expensive (as are new hobbies), but I managed to find one for a cheap price. Since it's cheap, I'm sure that it'll be more flimsy and so I'll be sure to ensure that my dog is safe.

Cool -- I hate to say it because it's like kind of obvious but not really. You know, the phone rings, or lunchtime comes, or you need to run in and plan to come back out later. The story is worth it for everyone to remind themselves about. It only takes a few minutes to happen and I would hate for it to happen because I didn't say something. It really was traumatizing to everyone in the rescue and the family and for quite some time was on the website as a reminder to all. It always stuck with me. I mean, we can't ensure absolutely everything on the planet is safe but it's just something avoidable.

I think that he will too k9kreationz. He enjoys being active in any way, shape, or form. So this will just be a great way to get his energy out and have fun at the same time. SheltieChe, I definitely understand that. Thank you for putting it into that perspective. I hope to just do agility for fun. I am nowhere ready to perform in any way myself. I was just thinking as a hobby in my backyard. He's never seemed to mind performing in front of others. But, tricks are different from other performances. As of right now, I'll see how he enjoys it as a hobby. He's very clever and I feel that this could be a great challenge for him.

naah, agility just a bunch of tricks chained together:biggrin2: if you like tricks you will do great! Do look into classes as well.

I'm excited for you and your pup. I think you two are going to have so much fun! Definitely take a class if you can. Then you can learn the proper way to do things and how to train them too.

Yikes. Good point though. Especially with chutes.

I know I saw a video of dogs "playing" in the field with agility equipment. Two dogs were chasing one another. There was a tunnel under the DW, and the dog was jumping onto the tunnel, onto the DW, back to the tunnel, oops, he slipped off, etc. I was just waiting for something bad to happen. I thought, you're a trainer, that is irresponsible....and they thought it was cute. Ugh.

As with certain sports, yes, playing on the equipment can be fun, but it can also be dangerous.

Thanks for the reminder.

Equipment, no matter for which sport can become dangerous when used without caution. It's always a good reminder to have. That's so traumatizing for the poor family. It could have been unavoidable for sure. Agility is fun, but it also is meant to be taken seriously, to an extent at least. The dogs I've seen do agility seem to focus because it's a great mental stimulant. I can't believe that those trainers were just letting their dogs play with that equipment. I'd warn them of the risks if I watched that video. Was it on Youtube?

Thanks everyone! I'm excited to see what he can do too. It's just tricky because there are so many things I want to teach him; heelwork, more frisbee, agility, ect. But, I know that one at a time is best. Don't want to confuse him

It sounds your dog is gonna love agility, I wouldn't worry :) Though I definitely agree that you should find good trainer in your area. If you mess up in early agility training, it can become quite a problem later.

It sounds like it. Thank you! I'm going to make more jumps as the kit I want to purchase is really small. PVC piping, I've heard, is the best way to build your own agility set. And you are completely right. I will make sure to find him a class and see if that can help me help my dog.

As of today (like 10 min ago LOL) Fillion has two jumps, a set of 6 weave poles and a 6' play tunnel. It took him 5 tries to "get" the tunnel, and two seconds for "jump". Fillion really seems to like it. Koko looks at me like I got lobsters crawling out of my ears when I even suggest he jump!

The two jumps cost about $30 getting everything from Home Deficit, and the weave poles $20. Play tunnel 15.00 from Wally World. Its just for backyard fun at this point. I sure wish I had a bigger back yard. Fillion is not jumping or running the tunnel by himself though. He seems to think I have to start the game and be out there with him. Another example of Fillion's Rules LOL. Will see how long it takes him to get the weaving thing. DH just put them together this morning.
