Wow was I scared!

Mom had a physical therapy session today so as usual I put everyone in their crates and gave them a chew to keep them occupied while they were working. Once the therapist left after about an hour and a half I heard Lacey-Lou coughing and gagging. I at first thought she was just getting greedy and that chew had gone down her throat a little too far and she was getting it back up to chew it some more. But in reality she tried to swallow a big chunk and it got stuck in her throat.. She couldn't breathe or gag it up. Man was I scared. I grabbed her out of her crate and held her upside down with her back up against my chest and just started pumping on her stomach. Kind of like a doggie Heimlich maneuver. She finally spewed it out onto the floor and took several gasping breaths before she was herself again. I've been watching her for any possible after affects from the incident, but she seems to be her old self again.
Whew I'm so glad I read those articles on doggie emergency medical treatment... I think I would have lost her if I didn't know how to do the Heimlich....

Hugs

OMG! You are so lucky that you caught it in time!

Let that be a reminder to all of us to be careful about what we leave for our pups to keep them occupied!

Thank god, she's all right!

I'm glad you were successful! Its a terrifying moment when you find yourself the one in charge of success or disaster in an emergency!

Job well done Judy

Lacey-Lou thanks you ! Yes, this is a wake-up call to all of us to keep up on rescue manuvers for our furkids.:uhoh: You just don't know when anything will happen. Thank God you heard her and were successful ! You had everyright to be scared, I know I would have been.

I'm so glad Lacey-Lou is fine

I found a link to how to perform a Heimlich on a dog and although the demonstration is on a cat and it's not quite a demonstration, but I found it very informative. Here is the link : http://www.petplace.com/dogs/heimlich-for-your-dog/page1.aspx.

There are a lot of info on the web so I went right away and read some of it. I hope I will never need it, but when something like that would ever happen to Alfie I wouldn't have time to look it up on the internet then

I am so glad you were there to help Lacey-Lou! Now I understand why it's said to give treats and chews only under supervision! :eek2: Thanks for sharing -- and thanks, Alfie's Mom, for the web site!

Wow, that's really scary! Glad she's ok! I'm definitely going to look up doggie emergency procedures after reading your story!
