Yapping????

Jasper our almost 9 month old never barked until Easter time.since then he holds the worlds record in decibal noise!
His bark is combined with barking,and a talk back mode that I am trying to find the mute button somewheres underneath his coat!!
I thought for sure he would never learn.Trapp the oldest has never been yappy,only when Earnhardt (lab) initiates the alarm to bark,does he follow suit.

Che is not a barker at 10 months and he was pretty quiet while a baby. He is vocal at times, for example we are working on vacuum issues but generally he does not run to the fence to bark, does not bark in the window, does not bark while running agility course etc. My theory- it is partly result of his temperament and partly our effort. He has good and steady temperament, not noise sensitive. He also was rarely left alone, received tons of attention and training. We worked hard on " good dog is tired dog" " fun is outside, house is place to rest" goals.

I think it really depends on the pup.
I would not call Sadie yappy but she most certainly did grow into her bark. She barks much more now than when she was a pup, but usually only to sound the intruder alarm.
Ginny on the other hand was vocal immediately and continues to be. She's always grunting, growling, whining or barking at something. She's not too bad so long as we keep her excitement levels down, that's when she gets REALLY annoying.
I'm a firm believer in discouraging barking in shelties when they're young, since they're a vocal breed. I've found that discouraging barking doesn't stop barking, but keeps it at a manageable level.
One of these days I'll record Ginny yapping at the park, its pretty unbelievable.
If you've seen this video of her howling then I'm sure you can only imagine what her bark is like.

Vash is 7 months old now, he hasn't really been much of a barker. Though he has been getting more vocal these past few weeks.
He's been giving me a ton of guff every time I'm laying on the couch and not playing with him *erRaR rarrow rarrrr WOOF!*
He'll also participate in a bark fest with me if I bark at him. Which can be pretty funny at times.
But other than that he doesn't really bark unless he's REALLY REALLY gotta go potty.

Sca is not bad but if he is really excited he random barks and if he thinks I am not being entertaining enough he will tell me all about it

Justice didn't bark much at all until I got Ember when he was 3 yrs old.
Ember had a mouth from about 4 months up. She is an alarm barker and that gets Justice going. She also barks at me when I put her in her kennel and when we get to where we are going in the car.
Diva was a talker from the day I brought her home. Grunts, short ahah sounds under her breathe and barking of all sorts short yips, long barks ,demanding bark. She runs though the yard barking like yippee, she tells my off during agility if she feels I too slow. She barks when playing with the other dogs. She does know quiet and has gone much better. She does not bark all the time though only when she has something to say.
Pike was a barker for day one too. Pike is a neurotic barker. He just barks no rhyme or reason to it. When he was stressed he barks worse. He is pretty good now at 7 yrs but he was horrible for a long time.
Grizz barks when playing. He is pretty good otherwise. Kramer at 9wks already barks alot when playing. He is really good otherwise.

I believe it does depend on the dog and also how you respond to the barking. Amber is the alarm barker and it does get annoying with her under the breath yapping. Maddox is not a barker at all...he goes days without a peep. He'll only bark when Amber and him are rough housing, even then, it's only 2 teasing barks and that's it. My only tip is not to encourage it by rewarding them after they've barked. For example, don't give them the toy or the food, or whatever it is they are anticipating right after they've yapped at you. Wait them out and continue once they are quiet. So yes, it depends on the type of the dog and how you condition them.
