Yelps at the slightest touch

Jake the Dog just turned 4. Since he was about a year or so old, he will occasionally yelp as if suddenly hurt when an area around his right-hand belly/hip is touched - what I call his right-read quarter-panel.

What is odd is that there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to this. He can be standing up in our lap and we can run our hand down his side and he'll yelp. It's almost as if he scared that something is going to happen - though nothing we can think of ever has.

But this yelping is VERY rare. I can wrestle with him fine, and I can vigorously scratch and prod all parts of him in that area and we'll get nothing. Then two months later, there will be a yelp out of nowhere, then nothing again for months.

Ideas?
 
I had this with Casey. Started in June almost 2 years ago. A severe yelp out of the blue. Told the doc the next time I was in and we went all over his right side trying to find something that made him yelp. Zero.

This went on for over 6 months! FINALLY we were able to feel a lump. Doc did the surgery to remove it since we thought that was causing him pain. The fatty tumor was nothing BUT it was growing between layers of muscle! That's why it took so long for us to find it. And it had to have been painful.

Doc showed me the tumor and you could see indentations in it from the muscle and ribs.

All is good now.
 
Tinsel is that way about the region between his forelegs on his right side. We surmise that it is due to the dropped pastern on his right front causes strain to the muscles in that area. I am going to talk to the vet about other causes when he goes in for his next Thyroid panel. Poor guy, never know what else is going to trouble him healthwise. Interesting about the fatty tumor - maybe I will talk to my friend with the standard schnauzer. She knows he has one and he is no longer wanting to go for long walks. She thought it was because of him being nearly 12 - 9 days younger that our Terv, Rhi. Hmmmmmm.
 
Thanks for the feedback so far. Will be really looking him over for any lumps tonight.

He's probably yelped about 15-20 times over the years. Many times people are stunned and say "What did I do?!?" or "I barely touched him".

So does Ember. In fact, she did it just last night when her favorite friend went to pet her. She didn't even touch her but Ember moved in a way that the leash pulled her collar.
 
Hollie used to do that too. We could not figure it out forever. We eventually learned she had gallbladder disease and we think the pain from that caused her to yelp in pain. Now Hollie also did learn to use the yelping and crying to her advantage. She knew she would get lots of attention if she was "hurt". So she did become a bit of a faker at times.
