Your FAVORITE training treat? Help!

I start obidence in a week. I need to bring SOFT treats so I thought maybe a cheese slice? cheese string? Hot dog? Well cheese will bun her up, and lace is allergic to pork. So I bought wellness puppy soft treats and they were 6 bucks for 50 little peices... and she didnt even go nuts over them:mad: So im wondering if anyone knows of a cheaper, healthier alternative then paying for these extremly overpriced treats... HELP!

And something thay is easy to take and dosnt smell real bad (tuna or fish)...
 
I use turkey hot dogs for training. I cut them up into very small pieces. Bailey goes crazy for it.

Bailey also likes Zuke's Mini Naturals. I use the salmon flavor. However, this flavor does have a pungent odor...good thing I have a terrible sense of smell! :wink2: It also comes in chicken and peanut butter flavor.

I use Zuke's Mini Naturals also. Edan and CJ both love them. I also take some string cheese as a high value reward. I only give them string cheese when they figure out something new or difficult they've been working on. This reduces the amount of cheese they consume in a session.
 
The turkey hot dogs are a good idea if i can find them organic... I know what the nitrates in deli/hot dogs do to human skin so I cant imagine a dog. If that fails ill go the treats you all are recommending :) thanks so much guys! I can always count on sheltie nation for a good recommendation:wink2:
 
Sorry Sca loves Well Bites, I just break it into quarters or halves for him. Now cheese :eek2: I brought a piece from my sandwich from the kitchen into the living room and he immediately did every trick he knows and popped up like 'surely ONE of those gets me that cheeeeeesse" :lol: But then he has been described as VERY food motivated
 
The string cheese really does go a long way, particularly if you slice it lengthwise into 4 strips, then across. One piece can render 50 + treats.

The other thing I've done, which is very tasty and cost effective, is to buy chicken gizzards, boil them, then slice them up into tiny pieces. They come in a 1/2 pint container, cost less than $1.50, and can be frozen to take out whatever you need. Gizzard pieces do not crumble. You might not want to put them in your pocket, but they're great for a bait bag.
 
How about giving fishy fudge a try.I make them here,and the guys love them.I actually pipe the batter thru a pastry bag,they resemble a hershey kiss,and you can make them even smaller.

When I use them in my pouch,I actually break it in half,and it is plenty.They don't crumble in your bag either.Its a nice soft treat if you don't overbake them.


FYI...although not much oder after cooling,your house will smell of salmon while they are baking.

Prosessed treats,they love Merricks.Katherince gave the pups a bag of these treats when she was here for the sheltie gathering. They are dehydrated beef lung.these dogs go nuts over them.
 
My dogs favorite boiled liver. I don't know your prices but here I can get it $1 to $1.50/lb. I slice the liver into strips(if it is slightly frozen it is easier). Throw the whole thing in the pot with a dash of garlic power. Ember and Diva will almost take my fingers off. 1lb/2.2kg makes 4wks of treats for one dog. I just put the leftovers in ziplock bags or tubs and freeze it. Take out a bag about an hour or 2 before I need it and thaw in the fridge. I have a little cooler that I take to shows for the treats. I do the same thing with chicken breast, beef, venison anything I have around. Got tired of paying $6 to 11 dollars a bag for treats with 3 dogs I was going broke.

Of course they like the hotdogs and string cheese and tortilli too but I prefer to fed them to eat the meat as it is less processed

We use pupperoni and beggin strips a lot. Another thing I like to do is go to the deli/bakery part of a store and get a nice sized chicken for $5. They are already cooked. You can eat some of it yourself and then give the rest to the dogs for training treats. It's not any more expensive than a "good" bag of dog treats, and dogs LOVE chicken!

You can also go to the section where they slice the lunch meats. If you catch a sale you can get some good deals that way, too. :yes: The same for the cheese! They slice cheese for you, and sometimes they have a good sale on the cheese. You can make yourself a sammich and give your dogs training treats. :lol:
