How hard is it to find a tick on a dog, even a really a really hairy one?

When I started reading the story my first thought was that it was a tick causing it. My Nick has LOTS of coat, but I notice when he has a tick. I tend to wonder if the dog in question was ever groomed - I would think you would notice it then.

    Ideal Sheltie

Thanks for the link. I also downloaded a copy and will be studying it. I don't plan on showing Nick, but would like to know how close he is to the standard. I may be prejudiced :wink2: but I happen to think he is perfect!! Except for the barking at me when I sneeze.

    Crufts 2016

I don't know the breed standard but being a breeder (Persian cats) I do feel that some push the limits of what is acceptable. To my uneducated eye, there appears to be something wrong with the bitch in question. As a potential buyer, I would never buy an animal that looks like that. This is...

    Shampooing

Looks like I will be buying some of the CC products for Nick - I use them for my Persian cats and love them!

    Birthday fpr Nick

Today is our Nicks 3rd birthday. He got his name from St Nicholas since he was born on Christmas Eve. Happy B-day to our wonderful boy!

Remember the Sheltie that went ballistic at a sneeze?

Nick does this, usually only when I sneeze. He did start doing it to one of the cats before we lost her to cancer a few weeks ago. His new thing is to bark at me when I cough now. My doctor put me on something that has the side effect of making you cough so he has been having a GOOD time...

    undercoat rake

I know it would be painful if you hit a knot. I check his coat out before using it. We get the knots, if he has any, out first then use it. I just wish I had seen these years ago when we had our Collie - he had a massive coat just like Nick. I must be a masochist - I love having pets with great...

    undercoat rake

Do any of you use this for your dog? Using just a plain brush KILLS my hand (I have carpal tunnel and trigger finger in both hands) because it takes a long time to brush him! It removes the 'tufties' as I call them - the clumps of undercoat hair that I brush out. After the rake then I brush -...

    Bella and the creeping potty!

Nick has always walked and done his business - I just thought he was weird. I guess not after reading this.

    Drying question - probably silly

If I used a Conair dryer I would be drying until next week! My Nick has SO MUCH COAT! I wish my Persians had half as much as he does. The 3 dryers I have are all professional pet dryers. Only the Oster has heat, the others are just forced air which blows the water out of the coat. I was just...

    Drying question - probably silly

When you dry your Sheltie, (1.) Are you using a forced air dryer? (2.) Do you dry with or against coat growth? As some of you may know, I have show Persians. When I groom them I blow dry after the bath. I use a forced air dryer to blow against the hair growth to fluff them up and to keep the...

Nick is getting a little strange

No, it can can be wet or dry - he hates it. I know it is a behavior issue, because when my grand daughter comes over or he sees the neighbors grand kids he has no hesitation about going on the grass. If it was discomfort because of his neck going down the stairs, wouldn't he show the same...

Nick is getting a little strange

He is coming up fine (that is when he can see through the steps - and they aren't very open). He shows hesitation going down. He is getting better about it though, but he still gives us trouble about going onto the grass. He wants to stay on the driveway.

Nick is getting a little strange

Don't think so - he will go up and down fine when my grand daughter is here. He also manages the stairs up to our bedroom okay. We have started putting his leash on him when we take him out - he goes down with no hesitation with the leash on.

Nick is getting a little strange

Since before he hurt his neck he has started resisting going out. At first he would go out, but did not want to walk on the grass - just the pavement. Now he doesn't want to go out at all. When my grand daughter is over, whom he dearly loves, he has no problem walking and running on the grass...
