Hi:
My 19week old Dexter wont go down a flight of stairs.. He is fine going down 1 or 2 steps, as going down the porch steps to go outside but from 2nd floor he wont do it. I've tried to coax him down but he just wont do it. I dont want to force him so I still carry him down.. Going up he is totally fine. Even had no problem (slight hesitation though) going up steps from beach to boardwalk(no risers) at Ventnor city beach a few weekends ago.

Looking for any suggestions or advice on how to get him to come on down. It's not a huge deal but for some reason when I'm on first floor he loves to just run upstairs and then a few minutes later starts whimpering/crying to come down to be with us..

thanks!

If its any consolation...Jasper will be 2 in Nov.an still will not venture to jump up on the furniture.Honestly,he just has not tried, nor cares to.

I do remember ours being hesitant. And espcially more so if there is no back riser on the step.Heck,I don't even like going up or down those.

Positive training, one step at a time..he will soon enough become cofortable

Maverick was a year old before he'd jump on the bed. I did not encourage it, one day he decided he wanted to be there bad enough on his own and so he did it. Your dog may do it also if his people are upstairs and he is wanting to be there also.

I know you said that he is able to do 2-3 stairs...what if you put him on the 4th stair (from the bottom) and call him down? I would do that and reward him when he got down. Then slowly add more and more stairs until he can come all the way down.

Marley was about 6 mo old before he would venture down stairs and now at 18 mo. old, he runs down them. By the way we are neighbors....Brigantine.

We vistied to places when Zak was a older puppy like 7 to 8 months and the would not climb their stairs and we carried him. He did get to going up but not down. Next time we visited out friends he was up and down with now problem then it was fun to go up and down.

I guess I will give it more time then and not *push* him to do it. I am southern NJ also - we visit ventnor city beach a lot - maybe we'll catch up one day and let the boys play! Brigantine is dog friendly also off season right? Maybe I'll go there this Saturday

thanks

Be thankful Sca thinks all the furniture and me are just part of his motocross track :eek2:

hah! I love when he just runs around for no real reason and makes his own "track" up as he goes along !! he hasnt gotten to motocrossing stuff yet tho !!

I actually tried this - although it wasnt quite the bottom steps it was 2-3 steps from the top. He turned right around and ran up - he seemed so spooked that I never tried it again. He's a little punk!!
