5 week old puppy! help!

I agree as well. 5 weeks or even 6 weeks is far too early. This is a baby animal which needs interaction with mum and littermates to ensure it grows up well balanced and able to interact appropriatly with other dogs as well as people. If it comes to you at 5 weeks you may well find it has seperation issues later on down the line as it may well become too dependant on you as a substitute.

Weaning can cause upset tummies and if this is compounded by the stress of going to a new home you could have some nasty problems to deal with.

Walk away or tell the breeder you cannot take the pup until it is 8 weeks.

Run away! Anyone who would place a 5 wk old puppy doesn't have a clue about being a breeder. Huge red flag of an irresponsible BYB or puppymill breeder. I would even say this about 6 weeks.

Yes the puppies maybe eating on their own but there is so so much they need their mom and littermates for. Most of all learning to be a dog. You will mostly likely have serious temperment issues with this puppy unless you know other puppies and dogs to let it interact with and are darn good at socializing a puppy.

I can tell you the biggest reason that she wants to place this puppy at 5 wk is because they are becoming active and messy and the thrill of puppies is gone. It is darn hard work to raise puppies properly. Most people don't realize. Find someone else who cares about not emotionally cripling their puppies for life

I agree...
I got my dog at 6 weeks and have been dealing with dog socialization issues ever since he was a pup. I thought I would be able to socialize him enough to compensate but NOBODY can replace a Mother dog to teach these vital things between 6 and 8 weeks :smile2:
I REALLY wanted that puppy, too. In hindsight I wish I had not taken the pup. I wanted him so badly.. and by no means is his breeder a terrible person, it's just what she was used to from the old days... Although, I like her well enough, she cares about her dogs, and all that I will not buy another one from her.
Course I love Toffee and wouldn't trade him in for all the tea in China

Run dont walk away from this person! A 5 week old puppy is no where ready to be separated from its mom. They learn valuable lessons that will lay the foundation for the rest of their lives! The dam provides their puppies with so much more than a milking station. Heck mine were still nursing at 7 weeks for a quick thirst quencher..granted mom was done with that whole scene by than but she still tolerated it a bit longer.

Im still shaking my head at someone selling a puppy at 5 weeks old...I'll echo what someone else said what else is this person skimming over..id be seriously worried!
