I'm curious. Do you think it's the "area"? Because I count 4 AKC trials in April, and 5 in May. I think we have an AKC trial somewhere within a radius of 50 miles every weekend. So maybe that's why they don't fill up quite as fast? And many times, when there's one 50 miles south of me, there is one 50 miles north of me that same weekend.

NADAC on the other hand, fills up VERY fast, because there's like 1 or 2 a month and that's within 100 mile radius.

Seems most of the AKC trials in my area have a random draw. An opening date, and then a date for the draw that includes all the entries taken to that point. You can still enter to the closing date but those enteries go into a waiting list draw. I entered a trial and didn't get in. My friend entered and didn't get a draw but got in both days later. Not really sure of the procedure. So luck is invovled in getting in.
 
Here's how it works- trials run one of two ways. All trials have an opening date and closing date. Some clubs choose to accept entries based on first recieved. So, they will take all entries recieved up through the closing date, pending there is room in the trial. The other way clubs can choose to run their trial is to have a draw. They will set a draw date, and if there are more entries than there are available spots by the draw date, they will hold a draw to determine who is entered. If there aren't enough entries to warrant a draw, all entries are automatically in, and all entries recieved past the draw date will automatically be accepted, so long as there are available spots. In either case, once it is filled, whether by first recieved, or by draw, names will go on a wait list, in order of when they were recieved, and if a spot opens up, it will be filled with those on the wait list.
How fast a trial fills depends largely on what part of the country you're in, and what time of the year it is. Here, most trials do not fill quickly, unless they are 4 day trials. The only time they get tight here is when it's getting close to the cut off date to qualify for AKC agility nationals. When it gets close to that, trials fill quickly, as everyone is trying to get last minute Qs and/or points.
