allergic to shots

We took Ember in for her 12 week check up and her 12 week shots. She was purfect. No problems, no pests, good heart sounds. She got her shots and we left.

Later on that night, her face started to swell. She later had vomiting, a fever, and rash (after the swelling had gone down).

We rushed her to the vet as soon as they opened this morning. The vet said she had an allergic reaction to the parvo vac and gave her a shot of benadryl. We are to give her benadryl for the next two days and she should be fine.

In three weeks, she has to go back in for her last set of shots. We are to give her benadryl the day before she ges in and she has to stay the night there.

Does anyone else here have a dog that is allergic to shots?

I don't want to scare you, this may just be me and I'm certainly no expert, but I'd be VERY concerned about your pup getting a second shot when there was such a major allergic reaction the first time! I personally would get a second opinion.

I had a major allergic reaction to a medication once. I was told that if I ever took that medication again that I would go into anaphylactic shock and possibly die. This kind of a reaction I'd think is also similar to bee stings. I was also told that with bee stings, when you get stung the first time and have an allergic reaction it is never fatal. It's when you get stung the second time that you have to be careful, that's when it can become potentially life threatening.

I know what a terrible and highly contagious disease parvo is, but in this case I think another allergic reaction could be a greater risk to your pup!
 
No, she was not given lepto. She was given Parvo, distemper, hepatitis (CAV-1), Parainfluenza, & bordetella. And I do want a 2nd opinion, just got to find another vet. :(

It said that the bordetella can cause an reaction, but it doesn't say if it was the nasal one or the shot. The vet we are using now, said that the bordetella wouldn't have caused it, because of the rash. I would have have thought it was the one, since Ember never had it before yesterday.

Anyway, Ember is doing much better. She has no swelling, she is no longer vomiting, and he's is her old silly self again. She was VERY happy to see my oldest son come home from school!
 
What my vet does is she will have me come in every weekend and give one shot at a time. It is more time consuming but that way there is less chemicals for the body to process all at once. This would also pin point which one she had a reaction too or if it was the combo reaction.

I am sorry to hear she had a bad reaction! :no: My vet also said we could also give baby benadryl to help any reactions.
 
I'd axe getting any more bordatella....my vet stopped giving it unless you plan to kennel your dog. Lots of dogs have reactions to it; and really its about as effective as you or I going to get a shot to stop the risk of a common cold.

As a matter of fact, ...many years ago, one of our puppies had an allergic reaction to what they later thought was the rabies vaccine....before we left the office...narrowed down to a specific "batch" somehow? He started breathing funny, rash, etc....and they had to put him in some kind of an oxygen tank overnight.. He almost died! Ever since then, he was given benedryl beforehand, and for a few days after vaccs..,and closely monitored before we left the office. I know that sometimes people can get a "pass" from their vet in order not to have certain shots given (due to allergic reactions) as required by their county.

Our present boy Rookie started to get whiny and figity after his last shots..and the doctor quickly gave him a shot of benedryl. It worked FAST too. I would not say it was an allergic reaction...just bothered him a bit...but I'll always get that follow up benedryl shot from now on...just to be sure.

It's odd how they can have had their 1st and 2nd series ... be fine..., and then..whammo..a problem arrises.

Yes, your letter was very helpful! I was such a wreck last night.

Ember is doing great! She is very playful tonight. She keeps stealing the baby's sock and putting them in her crate! We had to put her meds in a liver treat for her to eat them. Hubby tried to just feed it to her, since she is such a pig, but she was like 'Yeah right!'!

My two shelties were both allergic to the lepto shot as I believe most shelties are also. My second sheltie that passed away last Sept.8th on her first lepto shot as a puppy had a severe reaction that made her face swell out and made her look like one of those Shar Peis (hope the spelling on thats right).

Another question I have is about the six month heartworm shot,is anyone doing this.
