Anybody out there doing disc dog with a Sheltie?

Yes,these discs are just like the ones you see dogs use in comps. The lips of them are made a bit differant though.
A seasoned dog would have no problems catching it,as they know how to catch it.
I started Trapp on a soft disc,he used it for about 2 months before I purchased 3 of these. There was a good share of him getting bopped on the head,but it didn't hurt him any. He got the hint,and began to anticipate where it was going,when to go up to make his catch.

Talking to the reps on the phone helped me to decided what weight & performance I wanted from the disc. Not all discs are created equal.
Some have further flight,some are smoother in the air,some are floaters..etc.

If Koji is doing twists..now its time to combine the two!

I bought a couple of the Hero discs and they are really nice quality. But, I think it just depends how serious you want to be about disc.

Lexi's favorite thing to do is catch it and bring it back for a serious tug. With the Hero disc (or any plastic disc, really) it was hard to do and she just didn't seem to enjoy it as much. So, we went back to just using the soft discs and she really loves it.

Ashley, I was told the interaction with the Frisbee shouldn't be tugging. Because the competitions around here are all timed and include furthest throw/catch, also most caught and retrieved in a minute of 60 feet throws... (which is the only one Toffee and I could mayyyyybe go for) and trick dog Frisbee, also out for my Mr Short Strider and I ;) BUTTTTTT who am i kidding did I tug with it, of course I did, cuz Toffee loves it, too heheeheheh

A lot of them are feeding their dog on it to help make them disc crazy to create value for the Frisbee itself among other things.. what I found helped with Mr T, is NOT letting him have it, hahahahaha, hold it over my head and so on, and make him chasssee it, since he loves chase games... all about the chasing it and retrieving it...
Seems my roomie was pretty successful doing a little value building for it with T, while I was on vacation, because when I came back Toffee actually started to retrieve the Frisbee, LOL as long as no ball is around ;)
He learned to be pretty savvy at turning it with his paws if he couldn't pick it up... like he does in the video in sand there a few times, to turn it around for easier pick up...

I'll have to go dig out my soft one. Koji can barely catch his toys.....maybe I can see if he can catch a soft frisbee first.

When I toss his toys, sometimes he's facing the wrong direction and twists, turns, and does that kinda cool back flip looking thing I've seen disc dogs do. Definitely not high up int he air, but he does it. And TRIES to catch his toy.

I doubt we could ever do frisbee seriously. Why? Cuz I SUCK at throwing frisbees. lol. I think Miko can catch 100x better.

I should have specified--I never worked the transition much from soft disc to hard because I knew we'd never end up competing. Plus, the tugging builds SO much value for Lexi that I'd rather use that in the early stages any way and then have to transition off of it--just like using treats in the ring in agility. No tugging until it's all said and done.

Also, Lexi won't interact excitedly with a toy if there are treats around. So I had to use playing to keep the value and excitement high.

Of course I also have a really strong "give" command and she'll drop the tugging on a dime and be ready to go for the next throw.

wow, yeah, I thought for sure Sca would be the one that does Disc dogs...
It's interesting I don't see too many Shelties who do Disc Dogs, and I am not going to do a lot of it, but the more my friends are getting into it the more it looks like a total blast!!
Maybe with my next dogs...!! going to hold out for a Borzoi and another Sheltie in the next few years :winkgrin:

I thought on it cause he loves to catch frisbees but he lets the hard ones land then brings it back at best.
 
I just had to share.

The old man still has it.
This is Miko. I kinda have to throw it directly at him though.
Sorry for the bad video. Hard to throw and watch what I'm videoing. BTW, at the end, he just lets it go.

And Koji doesn't seem to "go for it" as much as he does his toys. May have to work with him. He loves tugging it though. Glad I taught "drop it".
