Arizona Sheltie Gang checking in!

Welcome to the forum. What a handsome sheltie family you have! I agree Mr. Smokey looks wonderful for 18 yrs old. You're so lucky to have him this long, I've never had one live past 14 yrs. I have a rescue too, Baxter, that I adopted from Wisconsin Sheltie Rescue last Aug.

I think it is just luck....a good loving home and ???? He has been with us since he was about 5. Everyday Smokey wakes up is another GREAT DAY! He is slowing down but is generally in good health. I think having the pups around is keeping him busy and they are learning to 'herd him' when he is in the back yard and doesn't respond to the first call....I'm sure he has some hearing loss and some vision loss as well, and probably has SELECTIVE hearing ! I have to be sure to turn on the outside lights at night so he can see the steps and things in the yard. He is the last one out and often the first one in since he isn't out 'playing' with the gang. He is a bit more active since the pups arrived and that is a good thing.... keeps the old bones moving!

Taz was about 5 when he came to us via Az Sheltie rescue. They had removed 9 or more dogs from a bad situation and he was never socialized and was very fearful of everything! Took nearly a year for him to become the friendly outgoing dog he is today! He never learned to play with toys either! But now that there are 2 very active pups in his life, he is becoming a puppy and actually playing with toys! He started by just picking one up and got that look.....now what am I suppose to do with it! Gradually he has learned what toys are for and gets one out of the toy box on his own. And the backyard is like a race track for Taz and the pups! Sure gets a workout with them!

Thanks to all for the nice comments on their pictures! Shelties are beautiful whether they are purebred, registered or rescues!

That is so wonderful that your rescue, Taz is now learning to play, able to take a toy out of the box and get one on his own. What a wonderful life he has now. Thank you for rescueing him from that bad situation. What a happy ending for Taz in his forever home with you and the other shelties. Puts "happy tears" in my eyes.
