Bailey is going to be 20 weeks tomorrow. When she was 16 weeks old, she weighed 6.6 pounds on a baby scale. Last Saturday, I took her to puppy classes. I decided to weigh her on their vet's dog scale and it said 5.4 pounds. I figured it was probably because the scales are different. I weighed her again this Saturday and it said 6.6 pounds. It was making me a little paranoid, so I asked my parents to bring her to my vet today and get her weighed. She weighed a little over 7 pounds. The vet doesn't think she is gaining enough weight. She said she's very small for her age. Therefore, they're doing a blood test to check for a liver shunt. Now I'm really nervous. I hope that is not the case. She was always a small puppy. She weighed 3.5 pounds @ 10 weeks. I got her from a good breeder, who breeds for show dogs. She sells the ones that are not show quality. She did say my puppy was too small to show. Currently, she's 12 inches at the shoulder blades. Also, while at the vet today, we got her urinalysis back and she still has urinary tract infection, even after being on clavamox for 2 weeks. My poor baby :( I'm just so nervous right now.

Definitely seems small but as you say, she was small to begin with.

How is her appetite?

I went back and checked Bacca's growth chart and compared to the standard.

At 20 weeks and 12 inches, I think she's actually pretty close to the weight she should be.

At 20 weeks, Bacca was about at the upper limit of the height range and similar with weight. But he's a big boned dog with lots of length and muscle. So if I compare the proportions of Bacca to Bailey they seem about right to me.

I would only be concerned if she starts to drop weight again or if there is any change in her behaviour, eating pattern and yes, the stool!

I would also get a decent quality home scale. Once a week, weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding Bailey. Subtract the difference, that would be her weight. That way you can easily track progress.

Keep us posted of your results with the vet. I think our Cleveland was around that weight and size. He was a smaller pup.

I'm still waiting to get Bailey's blood test results. I should find out this afternoon...still keeping my fingers crossed.

She did have very loose stools last week. The vet said to giver her rice and chicken for 3 days and if it's still loose then to bring in a stool sample.

While on the rice and chicken, she had one BM on Saturday that was normal. I mixed in a little of her kibble with the chicken and rice last night and this morning. She had a BM last night, which was half normal and half loose. Today, she just had a loose one according to my father.

Therefore, I'm bringing in a stool sample...ah why does everything happen at the same time. UTI, Diarrhea, small sheltie :(

Do you think it could be her food? She is on Wellness puppy chow. She has been on it for almost two months. She had on and off normal and soft stool, but never diarrhea until last week. Should I change it?
 
Soft stool is definitely not normal for a Sheltie. Shelties are a breed that tend to over utilize (if there is such a thing) their food, and tend to have harder stool, than other breeds.

I am not sure about Wellness. I think my sister used to use it for her Pug puppy, but I am not positive. We just had such a rotten experience with the food we have been feeding (not Wellness), that I am reluctant to give kibble suggestions.

Maybe do a search using keywords like Wellness Puppy loose stool, etc. and see if anyone else is having this problem.
 
I know people have said their dogs had loose stool problems with wellness, but she had been good with it up until last week. Her loose stool started right after the sheltie picnic. I know she was eating a lot treats that she found on the floor from other dogs, so at first I thought that's why she had loose stool, but it's been a week. It shouldn't last that long.

If she was doing well with Wellness up to recently, it may not necessarily be the food. It truly could be something she picked up at the picnic.

However, as they grow, their metabolism also changes. So a food that used to work, may no longer be working for them now.

If the blood work comes back negative, I would be tempted to start transitioning to a new diet. (Don't let your vet talk you into something they sell - you could do better).

The vet just called. Her blood results came back normal. No liver shunt! She's just a petite sheltie. I had been anxious all day. What a relief.

She's still having diarrhea. I'll get her fecal exam back tomorrow. If it's not parasites, then it might be the new wetnoses treats or her wellness food. I'm going to switch her to Innova just as a precaution.
