Bailey's Weight

That's great news! Who'd think we'd all get so excited over puppy poop... (my kids are horrified when I discuss it at length :eek2: ) Innova makes a very good puppy food and I'm sure you'll have good results. So glad Bailey is getting back to normal.

David is horrified too whenever I talk about dog poop! It's now officially on the "things we don't discuss" list.

He just doesn't understand how important it is....!:rolleyes2::winkgrin:

I think the most horrified people were my coworkers. They had to hear my phone conversations with my parents discussing if Bailey pooped and how loose it was. lol I think they're glad that's over.

Update:

So up until yesterday, Bailey had been having normal stool from Sunday to Wednesday. We finished her antibiotics on wednesday for her UTI. She started having loose stool yesterday and diarrhea this morning. Last night from 8pm to 11pm, she peed 5 times. The other days this week, she peed once or twice during that time frame.

I had been gradually changing her chicken and rice diet to innova puppy kibble for a little over week. She is up 1/4 cup of kibble mixed in with some rice and chicken. She seemed to be doing well, until yesterday :(

I don't know what to do at this point. Why aren't the antibiotics working? she's had a UTI for over a month now and diarrhea on and off for weeks.

I thought the loose stool from her wellness food and new organic treats. I stopped feeding her those. I was only using cheerios as treats now. This is so frustrating and I feel so bad for her.

Can the diarrhea have something to do with the UTI?

The diarrhea could certainly be from the diarrhea, but I can tell you from first-hand experience, that I know where you are coming from. Ember had diarrhea for 2 1/2 mos. I've come to the conclusion she just has a VERY sensitive digestive system. Her stool is still usually very soft.

I'll tell you what seemed to work for us....We got the canned Hill's I.D. from the vet. I HATED the idea of this as it is a poor quality food, but I was desperate at that point. I gave her only that for a few days and things started to firm up. I then Very Gradually added the Innova Puppy kibble. (I really wanted her on Origin, but that make the diarrhea really bad). Over a period of several weeks things started to get better. She probably went through 10 cans of the I.D.. I keep a few on hand incase things go backwards. (and they did. She's had diarrhea since her surgery yesterday. Prob. from the meds.). She does well on the Innova now. I think she's healthy, just is very sensitive. I'm also considering trying the Vibrant Pets that others here have talked about. Maybe that will help???

Will you be getting her re-tested for the UTI?

I bought vibrant pets. She's been on it since Sunday.

Yes, I'm going to get her another urine test. They said to wait a week after her antibiotics (which would be Wednesday), but I think I'll bring it in on Monday. I don't want my poor baby to suffer with this UTI.

I'm gonna try giving her a little canned pumpkin today. See if that helps her diarrhea. How much should I give? A teaspoon? She's about 7.5 pounds

Funny how discussing dog poop is such a normal dog mom thing to do. When Katie had such bad diarrhea with her cancer and some days she would be fine in the morning and then runny at night....my husband and I cheered when she had a good solid poop. She was this way for weeks at a time.

Geez. I just read over my last post. "diarrhea could be from the diarrhea". Duh, what was i thinking. I meant from the antibiotics. Sorry. I hope Bailey feels better soon!

Thank you. Actually her stool was normal when she was on the antibiotic. It seems to have started up when she finished the antibiotic :(

That is very strange. Usually, an antibiotic will knock out a UTI in less than 24 hours. I wonder if Bailey has some kind of chronic infection that she's not really getting rid of. It seems odd that you would see such a quick recurrence once she's off the antibitotics.

I agree with Ember's mom. We've used the Hills ID (as much as it pains me too because of the ingredients) for chronic conditions like this and it really does work, at least for gastric/diarhhea issues. I keep it on hand too for those times or when the dogs throw up. I think at this point I'd give up switching her food to anything until you've had the runs under control for at least several weeks. Keep her on the Vibrant Pets...that will give her a good basic supplement at least. But I'd ask your vet about the I.D. Hills also makes one specifically for diarhhea, I think it's called Low Residue. We had to use that for Pixie for months when she had chronic diarhhea as a puppy. You can get it either canned or in kibble through your vet. I've used both.

As for treats, if you buy the kibble of a prescription food like the Hills, what I did was just give a kibble or two by hand for treats. It takes soooo long and is so frustrating to get a handle on it! I found every little eensy-weensy change to her diet brought on a recurrence. The pumpkin could help too though, and certainly won't hurt her. Cheerios, or any grain/wheat product could possibly contribute to the problem, believe it or not.

I don't know this, but it does seem that the UTI and the runs could be two separate issues. Certainly a question for your vet. I'm so sorry Bailey is having such difficult problems! I remember very well what it was like when Pixie went through this for months as a puppy. Good luck and keep us posted.
