My problem is multi tasking. I can't answer the phone, conduct an adult conversation (usually with a business contact), throw treats, hiss STOP BARKING and sound intelligent. Sigh. I've taken to just saying "would you like to say hi to my dog?" So professional....
This reminds me of a true story of a captive Blue Jay who, every time the business phone rang, would imitate the phone ringing perfectly during the phone conversation. The person on the other end would say,"Shouldn't you answer the other phone?"
"No, that's not a phone, that's my Blue Jay"
sorry, back to the topic of dogs.
Lucy has been a serious barker since we adopted her. I think she was an outdoor only dog in her past world and it must have been the only way anyone would pay attention to her. She barks at other dogs, even if they are half a mile away, she barks at birds, the tv, hot air balloons (lots of these weekly in our parts), the sky, the door, grass, palm trees, bees, the pool, the wall...you get the idea. I have tried obedience class (keep in mind she is 100% the most perfect dog other than the darn barking!), the rattling can thing, the 'no bark' reward thing, yelling...I even tried the squirt bottle...which only makes her bark at the bottle...
Just as I was at my wits end about all the barking our neighbor said "oh she is cute, please don't get her debarked or do anything like that"...I had no plans to get her debarked - but it was nice to hear from the guy next door.

I have five Shelties. Thank heavens they only bark for cause...like:
--When ANYONE is on the phone ("SHUT UP YOU LITTLE MORONS!" works well).
--When DS gets up to let the chickens out waaaaaayyyyy early.
--When deer visit. When people visit. When ANYTHING visits.
--When I sing the chinchilla's good-night song.

I have noticed that when Parker was here that Zak barked more and since Parker has left he seem's to be a bit more noise reactive. I had my trainer here today with her puppy for a play date and Zak started barking at the fact my husband came inside and I shussed him ...nothing, Irene made a noise and he stopped, so I must not be approaching it right.

Penny didnt bark at all for the first 8 months of her life. I thought other sheltie owners must all be doing something wrong lol. Gradually she started barking if someone came to the door or to go out (both of which I thought was a good thing). Now she is just past 2 years old and her barking drives me crazy! She only barks in the middle of the night when the house is totally quiet, particularly if its windy out. She will stand by any window and bark like crazy. So in order for me to yell, shake something, or do anything to correct her, I have to get out of bed. I tried kenneling her overnight and she just barked from the kennel. I finally broke down and bought a bark collar, which has absolutely no affect on her - I think because her hair is so thick on her neck that she doesnt feel it.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

snort! I have to interview some franchise owners over the next few days....I've been holding off trying to find the "perfect" window when the dogs won't get barking when the housecleaner comes, the mailmain comes, my son comes home.....

The visual on this is fabulous! Next time I find myself standing on the front porch to have a phone conversation with a client, I'm going to remember this comment! Thank God for cordless phones!
