Ugh Ive been awake since 3am because Six Has decided its a fun game to bark in his crate at night... I cant decide what has suddenly brought this on (its been getting worse the last few nights)...but im ready to kill him!!!!!!!!!! I put him outside just to make sure it wasnt the emergency run out...nope...he stood there and looked at me....by that point I was really ready to kill him!!!!! He better not make this a routine habit or there is going to be a sheltie for free ad

Hmmmmm.....I think that there is a certain forum member who would keep her fingers crossed for him to keep barking

Riley's barking has been getting a little better, but it's not great..... Maybe it's the age? Since Six and Riley are really close in age, maybe there is something funny going on in the fuzzy puppy brains??

So many barkers, so little time...

Our current Sheltie trio are barkers. Bentley barks at the FedEx or UPS trucks going by, barks at other dogs he sees outside (hence the baby gates) and barks when he's playing with Zoey and Murphy. Our most recent addition, Murphy, is a challenge because he barks when he's playing, which means he barks a lot! We're working with him on the "QUIET!" command, but it's not going to well. Zoey is a reactive barker. She hears footsteps upstairs and she barks, the garage door goes up and all three start barking, someone comes to the door and all three bark.

I've just accepted the stark truth that this breed likes being vocal. However, I also know they do much better when they're all tired, which means ramping up their exercise. Difficult to do some nights when Cary and I are both tired from a long day at the office.

Fortunately, our three sleep through the night so at least Cary and I are getting adequate sleep.

Ah yes, my three are so tired from barking they sleep like logs all night !! That is one benefit. Thanks for showing us the bright side, lovemyshelties!

Being on the second floor helps. I took away their tables next to the windows, and so they have nothing to look at. They don't bark at the phone, will sometimes bark at the neighbors dogs, but those dogs are barking so much even my dogs can't bring themselves to care anymore.

They do bark in the yard while playing, and they bark as they fly down the steps to the yard.

I have five Shelties. Thank heavens they only bark for cause...like:
--When ANYONE is on the phone ("SHUT UP YOU LITTLE MORONS!" works well).
--When DS gets up to let the chickens out waaaaaayyyyy early.
--When deer visit. When people visit. When ANYTHING visits.
--When I sing the chinchilla's good-night song.

I yell at Sandstorm really loud if he is barking continously at the T.V. It works. But the neighbors can hear, I am sure.

They don't bark at the phone, will sometimes bark at the neighbors dogs, but those dogs are barking so much even my dogs can't bring themselves to care anymore.

I wish Bentley felt the same way. Our neighbor's dogs bark day in and day out, so we have to leave the TV on during the day and the fan on at night or Bentley will bark back.

I know a place in Nova Scotia... People are laid back, they let dogs off leash more... lots of waves to herd...

My problem is multi tasking. I can't answer the phone, conduct an adult conversation (usually with a business contact), throw treats, hiss STOP BARKING and sound intelligent. Sigh. I've taken to just saying "would you like to say hi to my dog?" So professional....

Speaking of visuals.....I REALLY want to hear Chris sing the chinchilla's goodnight song!

We have two barkers, but at this point neither of them has mastered the endurance part of the activity so the episodes are usually short lived. The triggers seem to be the same as everyone else here (almost anything) but we have not yet mastered a command that clams them up! I will admit that we do not have the volume problem because Mikos and Brie were both bark softened by their previous owners. Mikos can be standing beside you and he sounds like he is a few houses away, and while Brie has a bit more volume it is still much quieter than our little maltese x. While this does make things easier for us, we have also endured our fair share of dirty looks and the accusing question, "Is your dog de-barked?" from people at training classes or other outings. So at this point I put less time into 'quiet' and more time into trying to get a solid recall!

Seriously though, ALL mine bark! And when one does-they ALL do!! I must say that my husband has much more authority with them than I do. All he has to do is walk up to them and they hush......I can say: hush, quiet, NO!!!, no barking....etc. NOTHING WORKS!!!!! (I wonder if he abuses them while I'm gone) JK
