Best Food For Shelties in the USA?

May I do something wrong by still feeding Fromm's Adult Gold
Minnie has now had it for just over 3 years :confused2:

When I picked her up, she got ½ raw food and ½ dry food at the breeder
- she had so much gas that my whole house smelled
and at the same time soft stools

I did not want to feed raw so I tried
many expensive food brands without good results.

After I read about Fromm´s here at SN I found a distributor here in Denmark.

After a short while, Minnie's "stomach" was a dream.

She never has gas and her stools 1-2 times a day
are so perfect every single time in all these more than 3 years

I hardly dare to make a change

But is it too monotonous :confused2: - she also gets the same food as treats

In a year when she turns 7 I am thinking of switching to Senior Gold :rolleyes2:

We are almost 100% switched over to Fromm now from Wellness Complete Health Puppy food and Remy is doing great. He's still a little gassy but not as much as he was and we haven't eliminated the old food completely yet either (probably tomorrow). If Remy's "stomach" becomes a dream as well, we are going to be super excited. I can tell you that his poops are already less smelly and have a better texture to them (TMI I know, sorry).

From what I've gathered from folks here, if your dog is doing well on whatever food you're feeding, you should stick with it as long as it doesn't have unhealthy ingredients. As far as variety is concerned, if you're feeding your dog an ABC Company "Lamb & Rice" food, you should sometimes switch over to ABC Company "Chicken & Rice" food to give your dog a different kind of protein. However, that all depends on a variety of factors that's unique to you. I feel like healthy dog food is important and then you can supplement with treats and rewards that offer a variety into your dog's diet. If your dog is healthy and happy, I wouldn't worry too much about switching things up. Change isn't always good or necessary. If Fromm offers your dog food with different ingredients, you might want to try it but I don't think it's essential. It's really all up to you and your pup.

Best of luck!

Bill and Remy

Hanne, I don't know what's in the Fromm adult but if there aren't the "bad" ingredients like peas, legumes etc in the ingredients then I would stay with what is working for Minnie. Honestly, once I found a food that worked for my dogs I stayed with it. I only switched last year due to the DCM scare. I have never worried about switching around the proteins. Not to criticize those who do - if it works for you & your pups then that's great.

And, years ago when Asta and Ally turned 10 I asked my vet about switching to Senior formula, his answer was why change what's working. So until Ally needed a pancreatitis/kidney diet I stuck with the regular adult. I think 7 would be a bit too young to switch to Senior in any case. Just my thoughts.

Thanks Sharon - I was just so much in doubt
- I really want to do it as well as possible :hugs

Changing the protein type sounded sensible,
but the "gold" food I use
can only be purchased in 1 variety in my country

Minnie thrive so well on it - so it is a great pleasure every day,
my thought was I might find another good brand that I could change with :wink2:

I admit, I am opinionated :) and not at all objective as I also feed the Fromm Adult Gold. Fromm Adult Gold is one of the very few kibble formulas that does not use peas as a substitute protein. I'd rather be feeding REAL protein. If you look at the ingredients, Minnie is getting chicken, salmon oil, liver, duck, and lamb. As I understand it, some switch up protein types to avoid a food allergy. But I will tell you, I fed Buddy (our first small standard doxie) Merrick buffalo his entire 14, almost made it to 15.

I do add things to the boys diets, like maybe a raw egg for a meal for Kooper with KA-Calcium added, or anchovies. They also get bits of salmon when we have it or cod when we have it. I feed beef liver treats, and a variety of treats consisting of different proteins. Personally, I feel between the varied protein the Fromm kibble and the things I add on occasion, the boys are already getting a variety of proteins.

Thank you Sandy for your good advice

Yes to avoid a food allergy

In fact, I completely forgot that I had bought herring,
which is in the freezer in our house in the city
we must pick them up

The peas are the major problem in the Wellness, which is why my vet wanted me to switch. My two adults do beautifully on the Purina Pro Plan Lamb for Sensitive skin & stomach (they don't have sensitive skin or stomachs but I like this formulation). The Pro Plan was recommended by my vet. As I said puppy is on Fromm and I'm very happy with it.
If you do switch food, do so very gradually, mixing about 1/4 new to 3/4 old to start, wait a week, increase to 1/2 & 1/2 etc.
Sharon do you feed less of the lamb than the other ProPlan formulations? I saw that the lamb variety has more calories than the others

Actually, I only feed the Lamb. I had a hard time with the calorie difference from the Wellness. Even though the Pro Plan bag stated more calories per cup they were losing weight on the same amount I've always fed. Kinda ticked me off b/c I wondered about the over all food quality then. But we have it figured out and everyone is doing well on it.
