Calming Collar

It is possible I suppose, application of Tshirt becomes predictor of bad things coming. Classical conditioning as per Pavlov's bells. I think it is very rare for T shirt and that particular person did not apply it right though.

Not everything works for every dog, but I was wondering if they applied it correctly too. I read one review where a person said it was a terrible product, way too tight, just about suffocated her dog. Poor dog, I can't begin to imagine how tightly that silly woman fastened it! Its only supposed to be snug! She obviously had no common sense!

If anything, Toby began to associate his shirt with positive things, since it makes him feel better. He gets happy and wiggly when it comes out.

And he lets me know when he's done wearing it, he starts trying to rub it off...

I too think aroma therapy sounds like a better idea. I wouldn't want to put an herbal collar on my dogs incase it was too strong and they tried to escape from it. An herbal flea topical completely traumatized Sadie.

If you really want to try the collar try putting it in his bed or the place where he sleeps, that might be helpful but will also let him get away from it if he doesn't like it.

I use the Thundershirt on my Belgian. It has made a big difference. She is still on alert but no longer shivers or drools and we can get her to go for a pee. My vet is the one that recommended it. I, in turn, suggested it to a friend with a rescued westie and she said that she uses it whenever Kaylan gets anxious with really good results. Like anything, it probably won't work in every situation but sceptical me had to try it on Rhi and it is definately helping her. I might have to get one for Tinsel, we'll see how he progresses but I will run out immediately if I think he might benefit from having one of his own. I think I am going to need a doggy closet for all the clothing:-)

Thundershirts are fairly expensive too, some where in the $40.00 range depending on the size of the pet.

I may look into it as Houston stormy season is fast approaching :rolleyes2:

Just curious what size you got for Trax. I wonder if that would help Koji when he's in his crate at agility. Or outside of it. Do you walk with Trax with it on? Or just when he's in his crate?

I actually bought the small. I contemplated the medium but I didn't want him to be able to chew it up. The small fits him a bit snugly but it fits nonetheless. I would never leave him alone with it on because it would be destroyed quickly. It's just fabric, velcro and elastic. I put it on when I take him out of his crate on the way over to the start of the course and I take it off right before his run. He walks with it on just fine. I also put it on when sitting with friends and watching the courses so that he can be with me without being obnoxious. I take that time to treat him a lot and let him know that wearing the cap is a good thing and will be rewarded.

As for being upset while in a crate? I put a blanket over his crate to block him from being able to see the courses so he doesn't get anxious.

Thanks for the info. I have to decide if I want to try it on Koji.

The Thundershirt is supposed to fit tight. Too loose and you won't get the desired result.

I don't think there is anything particularly miraculous in the product material itself. I think you need to think of it as similar to swaddling a baby.

You can get the same results using a snug fitting dog t-shirt or child's t-shirt at a fraction of the cost.

Its worth the money if you think you'll be using it on a regular basis. I bought Toby a thundershirt and it was worth every penny. He mainly wears it during thunderstorms now, but also if there are a lot of big, loud trucks going down our street.

Its important that it should fit 'snug,' and NOT 'tight'

No, there's nothing special about the material, its just cotton.

And yes, it does work in a similar way as swaddling a baby or deep touch therapy (also called hug therapy) on people with autism. This is a really neat article about it.

You are correct, snug not tight.
