Cody met a 400 lbs black bear

We have them frequently in our back yard. They routinely destroy my bird feeders, even though I take them in every night. One afternoon, I found one sitting 10 feet outside my dog fence looking at the Shelties barking at him. I have an air horn I use to get rid of them but lately they just look at me like, "Really, lady?" I love the wildlife we have but I could do without the bears. I'm glad you and Cody were OK!
I want to see a bear!! I never have! Not in Canada or New Hampshire when I was there.

We live on South Mountain in Maryland which is a large forest area. We have lots of deers sometimes 10 or 15 of them at a time. They like the meadow area of the farm with a creek running through that area. We are not using bird feed since that really attracts the bears and I had strapped the lid on the trash can down with a sturdy strap and still the bear was able to pry the lid open enough to fish out the trash. So now the trash cans are moved into the barn to hopefully divert the bears away from our farm. Earlier in the year we met a black bear driving into our property and we stopped in the driveway to watch. The bear climbed over the fence on both sides of the driveway after discovering he was too fat to fit through the fence boards. And then he turned and stood up in the tall grass to look at us long enough for me to take a picture of him

This is my back deck, and behind my dog yard.... I'd prefer to see them in the zoo! View attachment 16927 View attachment 16928 ....
How often do you see them Ann? I wouldn't think you would in Connecticut. I wouldn't want any in my yard or close to my house. Coyotes are what I fear with my dogs, we've only had one bear on Cape Cod, he must have walked over the bridge, lol! Our first bear.

The one in the pictures is from last year. The one we're seeing this year has no ear tags. We suspect he's young. The trouble is there's no predicting when they show up. Sometimes they'll appear a few times a week and then not for a month. We average about a half dozen times a season. I'm hoping they'll be hibernating soon, but every time the weather warms up they come out again looking for the bird feeders.
